The 47th ASEAN Summit, which Kuala Lumpur is hosting this week, will be the largest meeting of its kind hosted by the regional bloc. In addition to leaders of ASEAN countries, world leaders led by US President Donald Trump will also descend on KL for this edition.
Trump will be accompanied by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. Brazil and South Africa will become sectoral dialogue partners of ASEAN, while the two European countries are on the verge of becoming ASEAN dialogue partners.
The 47th ASEAN Summit could be the biggest summit Malaysia has ever hosted, and KL city center will be “completely locked down”, with PDRM in full force for security and traffic control, according to Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. Roads to and from KL International Airport will also be affected when the VIPs arrive, so your best bet is to take the train.
In conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit, KLIA Express and Transit services will operate with increased frequency between KL Sentral and KLIA from October 22 to 28. The non-stop Ekspres has a frequency of 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and 20 minutes beyond that. KLIA Transit has an additional service from KLIA2 to KL Sentral at 1am. Travelers, prepare earlier and take the train.
