Hudson Valley artists and designers will make Ulster County owned this fall for the 2025 edition of the Kingston Design Showhouse.
The event is organized by Kingston Design Connection, a network for Hudson Valley Area Creatives founded by designer Maryline Damour van Damour Drake After she moved from Brooklyn to Kingston.
A second cottage in Empire style on the opposite bank of Roundout Creek from the center of Kingston was chosen for the showcase this year. Part of the city of Esopus, the neighborhood was historically known as Sleightburgh, later spelled Sleightsburgh. The Sleight family operated a ferry from the area that starts in the mid -19th century, and show that the house is on the land owned by Isaac D. Sleight.

County Records date the brick house with a mansard roof until 1865 and local newspaper accounts seem to show that the date is not far away. In 1872, David C. Reid advertised The house “Frans Roof” on 2nd Avenue for sale and describes it as in “Perfect Order” and only two years old. The moment it included eight rooms, a basement and a cistern. Around the house were fruit trees and vegetable wine sticks.
A 1875 Bird Purspective Van Kingston shows the houses of Sleightburgh, including the Mansard roof of this house, clustered on a hill above the boat landing. The map shows the few streets of the neighborhood filled with houses located between trees filled plots and grass.
According to Kingston Design Connection, the small house currently has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Designers will transform the landscape and interior of the house in time for the autumn vitrine, which runs from 10 to 26 October.

This year’s edition, the focus of the organization continues on housing and affordability. The proceeds of the show will support Ulster County Habitat for the work of humanity that create affordable houses.
