“For example, during the last talks, the Russian side said that they would accept the security guarantees that the United States offers to Ukraine,” top aide Kyrylo Budanov said in an interview broadcast on Ukrainian television.
US President Donald Trump is pushing Moscow and Kiev to strike a deal to end Europe’s biggest war since 1945, although Zelenskiy has complained his country is under more pressure to make concessions.
Ukraine is seeking ironclad security guarantees that would oblige the US and its European allies to take action if Russia attacks again after a peace deal is reached.
The latest round of peace talks, held in Geneva last week, failed to produce a breakthrough and was described as difficult by Kiev and Moscow, although Washington said it was seeing “meaningful progress.”
Budanov also said that Russia has not currently agreed to a summit between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which had previously been raised as a possibility by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
