Key or exchange chip? Oilers need an answer to a $ 41 million veteran this season

On the way to the NHL season 2025-26, it is not entirely clear where Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is on the depth card of Edmonton Oilers. He is a bit of a intersection in his career. As soon as a lock in the top six of the team and a player of 100 points, the veteran attacker is now linked to open the year as the third line center of the oilers.

His place on an Elite Power Play seems to be safe, but with young, dynamic talent that comes in, which may not last forever, especially when the downward trend on the MAN benefit of 2024-25 continues in this season.

After fighting through the final of the Stanley Cup 2025 brokenThe hope is that he has a bounce-back season. To be honest, the oilers need it.

The production of Ngent-Hopkins fell to 49 points last season, a sharp fall in his 104 and 67-point campaigns in the two seasons before. Things go the wrong direction and as he gets older, questions about where he fits can linger. There is a valuable player there – according to his recent invitation to the Olympic orientation of Team Canada – but has to pick up his production or consider the oilers to make a more difficult decision.

What makes Nugent-Hopkins so valuable is his versatility and hockey IQ. Fortunately, that will probably not decrease with age. He loses ground in other ways. He can play on a power play and penalty kill. He can play center or wing, first concentrate on defense, or play in haste. That kind of flexibility makes him a plus. That is, until he is no longer great in one of those things and there are better options for Edmonton to consider.

Ryan Nugent Hopkins Oilers is struggling

Can there be an exchange in the cards?

The beginning of the 2025-26 season for NUge will be important. If he returns healthily and starts a warm start, all worries about his effectiveness will disappear. But if he does not produce and settles in more depth role, the oilers wonder at what time if they pay too much for a third line, when they have someone like Adam Henrique and play fourth line minutes?

If the oilers feel the need to do the mid-season again, trade speculation could come around Nugent-Hopkins. It is important to note that he has trade protection, so he doesn’t go anywhere unless he wants to. But strange things have happened when a player thinks they are no longer in the best situation.

Nugent-Hopkins is the longest serving oil, so all the thoughts to act will be difficult. He is a real leader, a beloved teammate and a proven artist who has experienced the ups and downs of an oiler. That said, if his use no longer matches his cap -hit, conversations must be held.

*Author’s take:

Nugent-Hopkins is not a man who you exchange until you feel that you absolutely have to. Much more has to go wrong before the oilers have to discuss him to go outside for another player. He has a value contract that looks better when the cap goes up. He is useful in many ways, even if he is not a point-per-game player.

That said, if he is a trending to be a 40-point player and he is not used as often in the Power Play, he is not an option management, especially if the oilers can fill a different hole as a goal congregation.

Give him time this season before you press the panic button. There can still be a lot of play there.
