After the most recently talking about the goals of Jordan Poole for the 2025-26 season, it is time for part five of my series, where I give goals for the entire schedule in New Orleans Pelicans for this following season. In this part I will talk about the Big Free Agent of the Pelicans and someone who won Poole in 2022, Kevon Looney.
When the Pelicans Looney signed extremely early in the free office, many of us were shocked. Despite playing a lesser role in 2024-25 with the Warriors, it felt like he was a lifer in Golden State, spent 10 years there and brought three championships to the city. All good things, however, come to an end, and in the end Looney did not feel respected by the warriors and thought it was better to sign up elsewhere.
The addition of Looney raised many questions this season about who should start this season in the middle of New Orleans. But after Yves Missi and Rookie Derik Queen’s bad summer competitions of the Summer League, it became clear that the start spot was of Looney.
The addition of Looney is huge, because New Orleans has had a paint protector, rebounder and fencer for this level since Steven Adams in 2020-21. It will not be difficult for the 29-year-old to help the Pelicans this season, because his winning style of basketball would increase the floor of each team.
For Looney, his only goal this season should be to continue the same approach that he followed during his NBA career, who plays basketball winning.
He can’t catch his age
Now that Looney 30 is becoming during the 2025-26 season, his goal should be to prevent the understanding of father days for another year. Now that is perhaps easier said than done, but Looney has been an Iron Man during his career and has only missed 14 games in the last four years.
If he can dig deep and give the pelicans a good 6 points and 9 rebounds, while he also holds the paint and set large screens, then this season will be a success for him.
With the pelicans who prepare big men in back-to-back concepts, the plan is clear. Looney was brought in a reliable veterinarian for a year, and then by next season he can go to a smaller role, with Queen of Missi stepping into that starting role.
We often see that players hit 30 and have their career head downhill, especially if they are a very physical player like Looneey. Because he will be 30 halfway through this next season, his biggest goal should be to avoid the curse of age.
