Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett is officially rejoining the Minnesota Timberwolves, ending a nearly decade-long separation between the franchise and its most iconic player. The news was first reported by Shams Charania on Thursday.
According to Charania, Garnett returns in a broad, all-encompassing role that includes business initiatives, community engagement and content development at both the Timberwolves and the Minnesota Lynx. The move also paves the way for Garnett’s long-awaited retirement wearing the No. 21 jersey in Minnesota.
Garnett had been distant from the organization since his retirement in 2016 due to a feud with former owner Glen Taylor. During that time, he publicly declined a jersey retirement despite being the most accomplished player in franchise history.
That dynamic changed after the arrival of a new owner. Garnett built a relationship with Timberwolves owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, with both parties finding common ground that led to the reunion.
Garnett’s return comes at a time when Minnesota is firmly positioned as a contender in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves are 17-10 in the 2025-26 season, led by Anthony Edwards, who is averaging 28.7 points per game over 20 starts.
The current roster reflects a balance between scoring, defense and experience. Julius Randle posts 23.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while Rudy Gobert anchors the paint with 10.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.
Although Garnett will not have an on-field or coaching role, his presence carries symbolic and cultural weight. His connection to the franchise’s identity and competitive norms is consistent with a team that has legitimate postseason aspirations.
