A 39-year-old nurse, Ranjitha Gopakumar, from Thiruvalla in Kerala’s Pathhanamthitta district, was one of the 241 passengers and crew members killed in a catastrophic plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Ranjitha, a mother of two, worked as a nurse in the UK and had returned to India only four days earlier. According to sources close to her, she had hoped to complete formalities with regard to her government job here and to resume the service in Kerala.

She was planning her job in the UK and to come back to the service in India. Ranjitha had worked briefly in Salalah, Oman, before moving to the United Kingdom, had taken leave of the Kerala Government Health Service to pursue better opportunities abroad.

Her return to India was filled with goal: she was planning to complete the construction of a new house and bring her children and older mother to a safer, more stable life. Ranjitha is survived by her mother, Thulassykuttiyamma, and her children: the 15-year-old Indhuchoodan, a class 10 student, and the 12-year-old Ithika, who is in class 7. She also leaves two brothers behind.

Before her Ahmedabad-London flight on Thursday, Ranjitha was on board a connecting flight from Chennai to Ahmedabad, planning to continue her journey to the UK to collect her release certificate.

“She was happy and hopeful when she left,” said one next to family member. “There were so many plans. So many dreams,” he added.

News about the plane accident sent waves of grief through the hometown of Ranjitha, with neighbors, friends and relatives gathered in the parental home, offered condolences and sat in silence with the family.

The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, on the way to London, plowed directly into a medical college hostel just after taking off on Thursday, which caused a huge eruption, in what is called one of the most deadliest aerial tramps in recent history.

At least 265 people were confirmed in this tragedy.
