Banahan told FanDuel TV’s Caton Bredar on Saturday that Sovereignty has galloped in Lexington, Kentucky, in recent weeks and will join Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott’s group at Payson Park Training Center in Indiantown, Florida “early in the new year.”
“We’ll get him from Bill and then move on and hopefully next year we’ll have as good a year as this year,” Banahan said.
Speaking to Bredar at Gulfstream Park after winning the Mr. Prospector Stakes with Godolphin’s Knightsbridge, Mott said he hoped Sovereignty would join him at Payson in “about a week”.
“It would make a good New Year’s gift,” Mott added.
Following his Triple Crown exploits, Sovereignty raced twice at Saratoga Race Course, winning the Jim Dandy Stakes presented by Mohegan Sun, before winning by ten lengths in the DraftKings Travers Stakes on August 23. The Into Mischief colt is a leading candidate to receive Eclipse Awards as Horse of the Year and next month’s 3-year-old male champion.
Sovereignty was the morning favorite for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 1 at Del Mar, but came down with a fever a few days before the race.
In six starts in 2025, Sovereignty won five races, including three Grade 1 stakes, and was second in the Florida Derby presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Xalapa with earnings of $5,692,000. In total, he has won six of nine starts with earnings of $5,835,300.
