Blackout Time hasn’t started since a second-place finish behind eventual 2-year-old champion Ted Noffey in the Breeders’ Futurity Stakes (G1) at 1 1/16 miles on Oct. 4 at Keeneland. Blackout Time competed in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on Oct. 31 at Del Mar, but he was an official vet due to an alleged health issue.

Blackout Time, a son of red-hot sire Not This Time, returned to the work tab at Fair Grounds on Jan. 23 and flew there twice more (Jan. 30 and Thursday) before being shipped to Oaklawn.
“We don’t need any hiccups, but we’re doing well,” Gasaway said. “He has his fourth training here on Wednesday.”
In addition to preparing for his three-year-old debut, Gasaway said Blackout Time will work to get off the HISA vet list to regain eligibility for racing in jurisdictions under HISA guidelines.
“Wednesday will be our fourth job and after that we want to get two more,” Gasaway said. ‘So that’s six works. He’s doing well. He worked a day and a half before that for a week and a half and he wasn’t even breathing.”
Before the Breeders’ Futurity, Blackout Time broke his maiden by 9 ¾ lengths in a mile on August 2 at Ellis Park. Overall, he has a record of 1-2-0 through three starts and earnings of $210,691.
As an agent, McPeek purchased Blackout Time in 2024 for $210,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale. Gasaway races Blackout Time in partnership with Brookdale Racing and McPeek’s Magdalena Racing.
Gasaway, of Star City, Ark., is best known for breeding and co-racing 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan.
The 1 1/16-mile Rebel is Oaklawn’s third Kentucky Derby points race and carries a total of 105 points (50-25-15-10-5, respectively) to qualify for the first leg of the Triple Crown.
Blackout Time earned five Kentucky Derby qualifying points for his second-place finish in the Breeders’ Futurity.
