Kenilworth House Stud Dual Purpose Breeding Flat & NH winners thanks to proven families, smart mating plans and success in both racing codes.
Most breeding companies choose a track: flat or jumps. Kenilworth House Stud, tucked away in County Tipperary, never really saw the point. And right now, they’re enjoying the kind of results that make sticking to your own philosophy very worthwhile.
It’s not every week that you can celebrate a real double: a winner on the hurdles on Saturday and a smooth first success on the Flat two days later. For many stallions that would be a coincidence. For Kenilworth, it’s the whole blueprint.
About jumps, Hold the serve made it three on the jump for Olly Murphy in a competitive handicap hurdle at Kempton Park Racecourse.
Then on Monday, Pendella broke her maiden in neat style for Karl Burke at Wolverhampton Racecourse.
Two codes. Two trainers. Two very different types of horses, same Tipperary roots.
Not bad for a week’s work.
Highlights of the National Hunting Program
If you’re breeding for jumps, you better be patient.
Kenilworth was founded in 1991 by Diana Vasicek and her late husband Joerg. The model hasn’t changed much: a dozen broodmares, fairly evenly split between Flat and National Hunt. On paper it sounds simple. In reality, breeding NH horses is a long-term process.
Kenilworth House StudAs stud farm manager Gerry Ross puts it, you wait years for the result – and in between there are more ups and downs than most people realise.
Hold the serve. A six-year-old from Jukebox Jury from Bisoguet, a 21-year-old mare. That mating decision was made years ago. The foal was raised, prepared, sold, trained – and only now are the victories piling up. That’s National Hunt breeding in a nutshell: trust first, reward later.
And when it clicks, it really clicks.
Highlights of the flat program
On the flat side, the rewards usually come a little faster.
Pendella is a three-year-old filly by Space Blues out of Majenta, a listed mare who has quietly become a real producer. Pendella is already her fourth winner.
Before she came:
- In every way – a Chantilly Listed scorer later sold to America for €650,000
- In these shoes – a consistent performer
- Pretty sweet – another useful winner
Majenta goes back to What A Picture, purchased as a yearling in Deauville in 2002. Slightly disappointing on the track, excellent in breeding: sixteen foals, nine winners. That’s the kind of foundation every breeder hopes to find.
Approach to Deaville RacecourseThen there is La Collina, a daughter of Strategic Prince, who won at the highest level with the Vasiceks under the guidance of Kevin Prendergast.
At stud she has produced five winners, including: Sardinian warrior – a top-class Miler that, based on ratings, arguably deserves a Group 1 next to its name. After missing most of last season, there is hope he can make big noise again in 2025/2026.
Families Foundation: Bilboa’s Legacy
Ask around the garden and one name still lights up the place: Bilbao.
With Phantom Breeze she produced one of the most emphatic performances seen at the 2001 Anniversary Hurdle, leading by 21 lengths. Behind that day? A certain one Azertyuiopwho would later win the Queen Mother Champion Chase.
Bilboa was just electric.

Foot and mouth disease wiped out the 2001 Cheltenham Festival, denying her a possible rematch in the Triumph Hurdle. We will never know what might have happened.
She passed away a few years ago, but her influence is still alive and well. Through daughters and granddaughters, her line has produced Impervious, a heroine of the Cheltenham Festival, along with a string of clever hunters. That’s the beauty of building a real family: it keeps giving, long after the headlines fade.
Mating approach: no rush, no noise
One thing that really sets Kenilworth apart is how unhurried it all is.
While some operations secure nominations before the current foals even emerge, Kenilworth prefers to wait. Look what the mare produces. Watch how the stallion’s runners develop. Adjust if necessary.
If you bred a great foal from a certain sire, why would you think about it? Go back if you can. If the results indicate a shift is needed, pivot.
It’s old fashioned. It is measured. And for three decades it worked.
Ultimately, the goal is not to win a catalog page. It is intended to produce a racehorse.

Kenilworth Mares breeding stockFinally
There are larger studs. Flashier ones. Operations with more mares and louder marketing than that of Kenilworth House Stud Dual Purpose Breeding.
But not many can say they’ve produced a hat-trick scorer over hurdles and a promising Flat Maiden winner in the same week – and have the depth of family behind both to suggest it’s no fluke.
Kenilworth House Stud can.
And if the recent results are to be believed, they’re just getting started.
