Karnataka government approves opening of 31 PU colleges for girls across the state for minority students

The state government has approved and ordered the opening of 31 new Girls Pre University (PU) colleges for students from minority communities.

These colleges will be established in each of the 31 districts of the state on properties owned by the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf and will also be funded by the Board. The Board will manage these colleges through the Minorities Directorate.

Jeelani Mokashi, Director, Minorities Directorate, said, “As per the Chief Minister’s budget announcement, permission has been granted for the opening of 31 girls’ colleges across the state, with enrollment to commence in the academic year 2026-27. These colleges will be constructed with the help of the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf and will be established on the board’s premises. Moreover, all students from the minority community will be given admission in these colleges.”

The government on September 13, 2024, approved the construction of PU colleges for girls at Waqf Board locations in 15 districts, at an estimated cost of ₹3.18 crore per college, funded by the interest amount of ₹47.76 crore deposited in various bank accounts of the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf. However, the project was not implemented.

Moreover, the government has given administrative approval to the project announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Budget 2025-26 to build 16 PU colleges for girls at a cost of ₹6 crore for each college at waqf sites in 16 districts of the state.

However, it has been advised to postpone the opening of the colleges until the construction work on the college buildings is completed. If the buildings on the waqf grounds are available in the neighborhoods, they should be used; if not, temporary rental arrangements should be made for other buildings, the government has instructed the ministry.

These colleges will have a combination of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology (PCMB) in the science stream, Computer Science, Economics, Business, Accountancy (CEBA) in the Commerce stream and History, Economics, Political Science, Sociology (HEPS) in the Arts stream. Each stream will have a strength of 60 students per year, making a total of 360 students per college.

The state government has approved a total of 589 posts for teaching and non-teaching staff in these colleges. A total of 19 posts have been approved for each college, including a principal, 15 lecturers, a second departmental assistant and two posts in the D group.
