A federal judge has given a provisional order that blocks the investigation of the Federal Trade Commission into left-handed lawyers group Media Affairs.
In 2023, Media Matters Research published that advertisements from large companies had appeared in addition to anti-Semitic and other attacking content at Elon Musk ownership X. When large advertisers then withdrew from the platform, X complained to media matters. It also sued advertisers and advertisers groups about what it claimed was a ‘systematic illegal boycott’.
After Musk took up the then Donald Trump again in January, the FTC also started an investigation into whether media affairs had done Illegal collaboration with advertisers.
On Friday, however, Judge Sparkle L. Sooknanan chose the side of media cases and blocked the FTC investigation. In Her decisionSooknanan (a judge of the district court for the District of Columbia, appointed by Joe Biden), wrote that the article of the media matters “TypessStial first amendment activity” represented and the “extensive” research requirements of the FTC seemed to be “a retaliation”.
“It should alert all Americans if the government takes revenge on individuals or organizations for the fact that they enter into a constitutionally protected public debate,” she wrote. “And that alarm should sound even louder when the government takes revenge on those who deal with news limits and reporting.”
Sooknanan noted that Andrew Ferguson had appeared as the current FTC chairman on the Steve Bannon podcast before his appointment and called the FTC to investigate progressive groups that criticized the online disinformation, and that he had “made public remarks about the FTC macrafts”.
The FTC did not immediately respond to a techcrunch -e -mail asking whether it is planning to appeal.

Regardless of the legal outcome, the lawsuits of X have already had a significant effect on the intended organizations, in which media cases are cutting back staff (one of the dismissed researchers is now for the congress), while the world federation of advertisers are brand safety program and Allegedly complained about leaked finances.
Sooknanan said that the FTC research has also had its ‘intended effect’, which encourages the media cases to decide “against the pursuit of certain stories about the FTC, chairman Ferguson and Mr. Musk.”
