When people imagine joyrides, they imagine a teenager spinning donuts or blowing through stop signs. However, a man in Canada had other plans when he stole an articulated city bus on Tuesday. A 36-year-old joyrider decided to make stops while picking up fares and dropping off passengers in Hamilton, Ontario. Despite being lost, local police even complimented the man’s driving after arresting him on several charges, including obstructing police.
The actual driver of the bus pulled into the MacNab bus terminal around 9pm and got off for a break. At that point, the man boarded the bus, got into the driver’s seat and drove away with passengers on board. According to CBC Newsthe passengers only realized that the joyrider was not the real operator when he made a wrong turn and left the planned route. They didn’t panic or try to escape. Instead, they instructed the driver on how to reach their destination safely.
He did an excellent job, a Hamilton police spokesman said
Police arrested the joyrider during one of his stops, about 15 minutes after he stole the bus. Fortunately, law enforcement officers showed restraint and did not attempt to initiate a chase through the city streets. Hamilton police also have not released the driver’s name because the agency believes there may be “a mental health component” to the incident. I’m just glad everyone stopped and no one got hurt. It was a much quieter ending compared to last year’s New York Subway joyride, when two teenagers stole a train and crashed into another parked train.
