Josh Naylor took the phrase “using your head” to a new level on Monday night.
The Mariners first baseman tried to break an inning-ending double play in the opening frame of ALCS Game 7, using his body to get in the way of Ernie Clement’s throw to first base at Rogers Center.
Naylor jumped into the path of the throw, causing the ball to hit him high and shoot into the air, allowing Jorge Polanco to reach first.
However, the officials met to discuss the call and it was ruled a double play due to Naylor deliberately interfering with Clement’s throw.
While the decision to use himself as a human shield was a notable one by Naylor, Blue Jays starter Shane Bieber’s response also caught the attention of baseball fans.
During a replay, Bieber, formerly a teammate of Naylor’s in Cleveland, screamed as he watched the play.
“What the fuck are you doing,” Bieber shouted.
The inning ended due to the double play and the game entered the bottom of the first inning with the Mariners leading by one after Naylor’s single to reach base.
Daulton Varsho tied the game for the Blue Jays, scoring George Springer in the bottom of the first inning.
The Blue Jays and Mariners are tied at 3-3 in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series.
The winner will advance to the World Series and face the Dodgers.
