Josh Inglis vs Cameron Green: Why is an 8.6cr man more expensive than the 25.20cr star?

Cameron Green becomes the most expensive Cameron Green

The IPL 2026 auction had several moments, but none sparked more debate than the contrast between Josh Inglis’ INR 8.60 crore deal and Cameron Green’s record-breaking INR 25.20 crore price tag. Green’s valuation exceeds Inglis’ compensation by a wide margin. However, when salary is broken down by match, it can produce a contrasting result. Despite selling for less than a third of Green’s amount, Inglis will earn significantly more per game in IPL 2026.

All-rounder, Green entered the IPL 2026 auction as one of the most sought-after foreign all-rounders and was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping INR 25.20 crore, becoming the most expensive foreign player in IPL history, surpassing Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

Inglis confirms he will play four matches

On the other hand, Inglis entered the auction after being released by the Punjab Kings due to limited availability for his wedding on April 18. Inglis was officially listed as available for just four games. Despite this, Lucknow Super Giants turned aggressive, outdoing several franchises and shocking PBKS by securing him for INR 8.60 crore, even with questions over how many games he would actually play.

Cameron Green receives only INR 18 crore

Although Green was sold for INR 25.20 crore, he will not receive the full amount. Ahead of the 2026 cycle, the IPL introduced a scheme that limits the maximum salary payable for foreign players to INR 18 crore, making it the highest retention slab. Any amount above that, in Green’s case, INR 7.20 crore, will be sent to the BCCI’s player welfare fund, even if the entire bid is deducted from KKR’s pocket. As a result, Green’s actual revenue for IPL 2026 will be INR 18 crore, not INR 25.20 crore.

Meanwhile, Green is expected to play at least 14 games, assuming KKR complete the league stage, with possible additions if the team reaches the play-offs. Across 14 matches, Green’s earnings per match are approximately INR 1.28 crore per match.

In Inglis’ case, he has committed to four IPL matches so far, based on the availability communicated to the franchises by the BCCI. At INR 8.60 crore for four matches, the wicketkeeper-batsman earns INR 2.15 crore per match, almost INR 90 lakh more per match than Green.

Josh Inglis to play additional games

That number could change if Inglis extends his stay. According to numerous reports, he might postpone his honeymoon and return after his wedding, possibly playing additional games. But even after four matches, his payout per game is already higher than that of the most expensive foreign signing in IPL history.

It is worth noting that PBKS released Inglis just 45 minutes before the retention deadline, after being told of his limited availability. The fact that LSG has bid aggressively, possibly based on a change of plans, has reportedly led PBKS to consider approaching the BCCI.
