Since the media day of New Orleans Pelicans, their social media pages have been on all major platforms, including Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, filled with clips of scrimmages and practices. In one of the more recent clips posted, Jose Alvarado was seen to motivate Zion Williamson in a Post-Practice Huddle.

“It started with you, Bro. If you play like this every time, it is the entire competition.” Alvarado told Williamson.

Alvarado says what every Pelicans fan already knows, namely that this team is better when Z is on the field and plays at its best. People who hold Williamson responsible have been a trend during the outdoor season in New Orleans. We have seen both Joe Dumars and Willie Green express that they have forced him to improve his habits both on and outside the field, so that he can reach his full potential and ultimately have a healthy season.

If you see Alvarado join Dumars and Green as someone who will be vocal with Z and tries to motivate him is a really encouraging sign. This clip emphasizes the importance of the role of Alvarado as a leader for this group, because he not only holds Williamson responsible, but also everyone else in the team.

New Orleans must keep Alvarado nearby

During the low season I felt that it was time for the Front Office to continue from Grand Theft Alvarado. When he came out of a career year, his value would have been sky high and that accompanied by the depth that New Orleans had on hold, it felt like the time was ripe for both parties to go their own way. However, this quote makes it clear that Alvarado is a huge piece in the goal of the Pelicans to build a winner.

He is a great culture man, and now that he seems to get into leadership, there is even more reason to keep him in the neighborhood.

Although Joe Dumars puts pressure on Williamson to become a voice on the field and in the dressing room for this team, it can take some time before he develops. It is extremely valuable to have a player like Alvarado to serve as a veteran for this young team. We have noticed that he is not afraid to talk or pronounce during his time at the organization, and that is something that this team now needs more than ever.

Keeping him in the neighborhood also takes part of the pressure from Rookie guard Jeremiah Fears. Having Alvarado if another option on guard means that fears would not be burdened with so much responsibility, which would help him to have an easier transition from the university to the pros.

One of my biggest worries about the Pelicans was what happens when Zion Williamson again disappoints. But after seeing Jose Alvarado come to Dumars and Green in the chase to make Williamson better, I don’t think fans have to worry about being disappointed in the 2025-26 season.
