Jose Alvarado has to build the career year to help Pelicans reach their peak

After talking about the goal of Kevon Looney for the 2025-26 season, it is time for part seven of my series, where I give goals for the entire pelican grille for this following season. In this part I will talk about the heart and soul of the Pelicans, Jose Alvarado.

Now that the 2024-25 season was just as terrible as for the Pelicans, Alvarado turned out to be a bright spot for this team. Posting career averages across the board of 10.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists per match. Jose was a reason for fans to coordinate and go to games, because his energy was unparalleled. With 20+ different players who fit for New Orleans last season, it was crucial to have a leader who could keep things under control, both on and outside the field. That person was Jose.

Every successful NBA team needs a player who can be an extension of the coach on the field; For the Indiana Pacers, for example, that person was TJ McConnell. Last season it proved that Jose Alvarado is that person for the Pelicans.

There were some rumors about Alvarado that were traded, because the Pelicans added a lot of depth to Point Guard with the additions of Jeremiah Fears via the Draft and Jordan Poole through trade. However, after Alvarado had sustained a spine/back injury while he represents Puerto Rico at the America, I think it is safe to say that he will not be on the way.

Develop last year and man the 2nd unit

His goals for this season must be to continue to set up similar figures as he did last year, while the man trusted in running the second unit of the Pelicans.

I previously mentioned TJ McConnell and his ability to be an extension of Rick Carlisle, on the field, and although that is something that Jose did last season, he should do the same thing this season. We have seen in the long history of the NBA that many boys have one excellent season and then become their normal self again. The Pelicans cannot afford that Alvarado does that.

We saw the value that McConnell had for the pacers, especially in a play -off setting. New Orleans needs that from Jose.

With the timetable of Dejounde Murray for return, Jordan Poole will probably be instructed to be the starting point guard. That means that this team needs someone to run the second unit before the start of this season; Alvarado must be that guy.

His assets as a defender, shot maker and playmaker already places him in the top echelon of Back -Poppunt protectors. But if he can have a similar impact like last year, this time in a winning team, he will enter the same layer as boys like TJ McConnell, Payton Pritchard and Tyus Jones.
