Jones takes six south

Burnham coach Mark Jones heads south to Oamaru with a truckload of form riders.

In Race One, the two-year-old A Bettors Legacy (Bettor’s joy) queuing in front of the stable. He had one start, was poorly controlled and did not participate. The gelding has completed two tests since then and gets a nice draw in two.

“He was checked in his first trial and ran quite well in his second. He’s a nice gal. It’s a 2000m standing start and if he starts safely and hopefully he does, he’ll be quite hard to beat I’d say,” says Jones.

Mighty Flying Miki (Always B Miki) on par in Race Two. He ran a final start fourth at Timaru, two lengths clear of the winner and is well tied at three.

“He’s going to be a really nice horse in the long run. He’s a big, overgrown two-year-old, but he’s got a little bit of scope and he tested well this week.”

Trotter Meandad (creatine) takes his place in Race Six. He was a close second at the restart, but tomorrow he faces a big field against a number of horses who have won multiple races.

“It’s just impossible to get the right races for low-end trotters. He had one last week, but I have to wait another six weeks for a new one. There’s no point in stalling at home, but he’ll probably struggle in that race.”

Three-year-old trotting filly Kowhai Sunset (creatine) will start in Race Seven. After breaking on her last start she was placed on the unruly.

“She has come away well from the unruly ones, but it is difficult against the mares who have won two. She is racing well. She has a chance of top four if she does things right.”

Jones has two starters in Race Nine: Stormy Visa (Dear Lou) and Bettor Way (Bettor’s joy).

Stormy Visa finished his last race in Timaru strongly, finishing a close second. He has a good record from the stand.

“He’s not a star, he’s just a neat little racehorse with good manners. He did well first and I’m sure he’ll improve from there. Over 2,000 yards from the stand on the grass he should be pretty hard to beat.”

Bettor Way runs from ten yards and is also in good form at the moment.

“It was a great win in Kaikoura and he has been there ever since. Ten meters away from the 2000 meters he will struggle. He is one of the top four of the pile.”
