Jon Anik was just as confused as the rest of us who saw Steven Nguyen see, a long -term beaten on Mohammad Yahya at UFC Abu Dhabi.
Nguyen set a UFC record by scoring six knockdowns (although there seemed to be at least one more than the official song) against Yahya on the way to a dominant second round knockout, which was only mentioned at the end of the period because of a doctor’s head. Fans and hunters were quickly questioned about referee Jason Herzog who did not come in to save Yahya earlier.
Be on Anik & Florian Podcast, Anik explained why he is one of the many voices that Herzog criticizes.
“What do we do in the form of fighting safety?” Said Anik. ‘Maybe I should call my friend Jason Herzog, whom I really love:’ Hey Jason, it’s Jon. Can you do a favor and just stop the fight? ‘There is a lot to be unpacked here. … Jason Herzog was the referee for [Daniel] Zellhuber and [Esteban] If you don’t hear anything else, I say today, I don’t know if I was suggestive on the broadcast that that fight should have been stopped at some point, but I thought Zellhuber should have been saved a bit to perhaps fight another day, and the result was that Herzog had quite masterful and the result was the fight of the year.
“But my thesis is always what we do in the form of fighting safety? The goals do not justify the means when there is a rally and there is a fight of the year. Only because Mohammad Yahya does not have an orbital break, does not mean that he will not pay much for this.”
On the call with Felder for UFC Abu Dhabi were commentators and former UFC hunters Paul Felder and Michael Bisping. The two themselves have been in many wars, but even they wondered what the limit was for the amount of punishment that Yahya could endure.
“Paul Felder said towards the end of round 2:” This fight is canceled, right? Because a doctor will eventually get involved here, “said Anik.” Bisping first called for a potential stopping because of all the knockdowns on the two and a half minute Mark exactly round 1, and I do believe that we do not judge any brain live in the minute, but after tallo, but after a tall. Unfortunately for Herzog this is the second time in two weeks that he has been the subject of criticism from the MMA community, because several hunters also called him to stop the UFC Nashville head event too early. Herzog ended that fight in just 35 seconds when Derrick Lewis struck Tallison Teixeira, who grabbed the fence illegally with both hands to try to recover.
Anik sympathizes with Herzog, who has to do with the debt for two opposite types of errors.
“You are damned if you do that, you are damned if you don’t,” said Anik. “They all make contact with each other. We can think back to Cheick Congo and Pat Barry. I just think Kevin Macdonald, many early stops in his career as a referee and I have repeatedly said that you are praised-I don’t think universally as a reference, but the consensus will go if you go a chaos-vanSit.
“You will be criticized if you stop a fight too early, especially in a large setting such as a main event or a title fight.”
Regarding Yahya’s corner, Anik does not think that they should be released of responsibility.
“A lot,” Anik said when he was asked how much Yahya’s Hoek would receive. “And it is probably shame that I did not recognize their debt in all this. I don’t know. Because of the show I have looked at it, and I don’t know if I am particularly reactionary, but it was not good.
“How much knock-downs as I don’t think we need a three-knock-down rule in MMA, but what about this, if you are taken down in an MMA round five times, do you think it’s fair that they stop the fight?”
