John Tavares calls out Maple Leafs’ immature game management after loss to Hurricanes

“They’re a good hockey team and they put a lot of pressure on you,” Tavares told reporters after the game. “Sometimes we’ve done really good things, earned chances and we can give ourselves an edge. And then, for whatever reason, our game becomes really immature and we can’t manage the game very well.”

Tavares was almost certainly referring to the third period, as the Leafs were outscored 22-2 in that frame. It was there that the Hurricanes were able to pull ahead, while Toronto was given no room to leave its zone. Dennis Hildeby, who Tavares said was phenomenal, was the only thing keeping his team from going all out despite allowing five goals.

Entering the weekend on a three-game win streak and playing some of their best hockey of the season thus far, it was undoubtedly frustrating for Tavares to see things go so dramatically in the other direction.

“We’ve gotten some traction and then we’re shooting ourselves in the foot again. We’re just putting ourselves in a tough position,” Tavares said. “There’s still a lot of hockey to be played, so obviously we have to pick ourselves back up, get ready for the next opportunity and build from there.”

Getting back on track will start with improving the defensive structure with foreign players, which has been a glaring problem all season and was especially the case on Sunday.

“If you do that consistently, you’re not going to win,” Tavares said. “Like it [Craig Berube] says: it’s 50/50. It’s clearly an area that we need to clean up. The transition and opportunities like that really give their team life and momentum and really emphasize our goaltending, and then having to chase the game.
