Joe Ryan gets no love in the 2025 AL Cy Young race in another Twins vote

It’s not like Twins fans expected their favorite players to receive an award, but for a few guys, some semblance of respect was deserved.

Last week, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) unveiled their 2025 MLB awards. Byron Buxton, who won a Silver Slugger Award, finished 11th in the American League MVP race. It’s nice that he got some votes, but he deserved much better than that. But that’s not exactly why we’re here.

Joe Ryan didn’t receive a single vote for the Cy Young Award, which is a bit ridiculous considering his solid season. Should he have won the prize? Absolutely not. Should he have finished in the Top 5? Also no. But Ryan’s production in 2025 was certainly enough to be on the list somewhere. Instead, he didn’t get a single vote. Big disappointment.

Here’s a look at Joe Ryan’s numbers in 2025 and where he ranks among other American League pitchers. Bold and italic numbers indicate a career-best metric for Ryan.

Ryan was in many ways a Top 10 pitcher in the American League, and yet he is nowhere to be found in the Cy Young ballot. He also posted 14 quality starts. Every time he lasted six or more innings, it was a quality start, which meant long-term success. It wasn’t just him eating the innings.

Shout out to Pitching Ninja though. Rob Friedman gave Joe Ryan an award thanks to his nasty breaking ball. Pitching Ninja earned Ryan the “Sweeper of the Year Award” thanks to a wild 3-foot horizontal break to get the strikeout.

Hopefully Ryan will stay with the Twins for another season. He was an All-Star for the first time in 2025 and we can only wish he gets more recognition in Minnesota. He deserves it.
