Joe Pyfer returns this Saturday to the Octagon on UFC 320 and wants to make a statement in the middleweight division when he takes on Abus Magomedov in a collision with high bet that could raise that Pyfer could get in the ranking.
Break (14-3) Comes from a decision victory on Kelvin Gastelum on UFC 316, a matchup that was originally planned to take place in Mexico before he was rebooked.
“Gastelum’s in the past and I got the victory and that is all that counts,” Pyfer told reporters on Wednesday, including Cageside Press.
“Before I fought against Kelvin, I was offered abuse and I said no. I didn’t like it. I didn’t think it was logical. I want to go into the ranking.”
For Pyfer, the goal was always to climb in the ranking, not to risk his position against a non -animated opponent such as Magomedov. But with the circumstances that shift, he now sees the chance to fight.
“I know it would have done something for my CV to beat a man as an abuse before I defeated Kelvin, but Abus was behind me. Then he got Michel Pereira fight. He won, he was arranged, I was not,” he said.
“The second that I won, I told my manager that I said I wanted to fight against abuse. I didn’t like the story, I am not going to say who, but they were a bit like I didn’t want the fight because I was scared. I don’t know what it was. So I was like yes, give me a Magomedov. Let’s run.”
Prior to his matchup with Magomedov, Pyfer did not hide to outline what he regards as the weaknesses of his opponent. He pointed to the recent setbacks of Magomedov and asked his cardio as key factors on his way to Saturday’s fight.
Pyfer even ran the story in itself and made a comparison with the criticism with which he is often confronted about his own gas tank.
“He is a very competent guy, but he lost to Sean Strickland. Then he lost to Caio (Borralho), but the common theme that I see in this matchup is that he can be hurt and he slows considerably after round 2,” Pyfer said.
“That’s a bit funny because everyone appears on my cardio, and I got the same man who has sh*tty cardio like me.”
