The duo arrived at Anfield last summer in transfers worth around £200 million and have enjoyed increasingly effective on-pitch chemistry in recent weeks, which was evident again tonight in the Reds’ 4-1 win over Newcastle.
The German playmaker scored the first of the striker’s two goals before half-time and later got on the scoresheet himself with a moment that Lucy Ward described as ‘pure class’.
Cole impressed by ‘frightening’ Wirtz/Ekitike double act
Joining TNT Sports as a pundit following Liverpool’s first Premier League win of 2026, Cole believes the partnership between the two is already a frightening prospect for opposition defenses and will become even more devastating the more they play together.
The former Reds winger said (via BBC Sports): “Ekitike has hit the ground running, he has been at it from the beginning. Ekitike and Wirtz look like they are enjoying playing together. The scary thing is that they will continue to get better. We are now six months into the collaboration.”
Wirtz and Ekitike have been deadly together
The duo have scored six goals between them since Christmas, a sure sign that their on-pitch chemistry is paying off on a regular basis, and one can only wonder how many more they will add to that list if they both stay fit and active for the rest of the season.
While the Frenchman got off to a fast start in terms of goals at Liverpool, our number 7 had to be patient for his first goal, but for the 22-year-old, famine has turned to celebration in the past month.
Ekitike and Wirtz have now done that 21 goals between them for the Reds, a more than respectable return that will surely continue to grow each week, especially given their current form individually and collectively.
As Cole says, the more these two play together and expand their already intuitive understanding, the more effective they will become for Arne Slot’s side, and that can only be bad news for the rest of the Premier League in the weeks, months and years to come!
