Joe Cole has talked about Newcastle United.
The former Liverpool and England winger discusses Sunday afternoon’s match.
Joe Cole on the chances of Eddie Howe’s side winning when they take on Brentford.
The Newcastle United boss was due to take on the Bees at the GTech Community Stadium with a 2pm kick-off.
Both teams want to approach this final international break on a high.
Joe Cole speaks for Newcastle United versus Brentford in the Premier League:
“Newcastle have saved their best performances for the Champions League and Eddie Howe knows that.
“He was talking about it in the middle of the week after the game.
“When you’re struggling a bit and have to go away, Brentford is one of the games you really don’t want.
“I see this being an exciting 2-2 draw.
“Expect a lot of set pieces, but for Brentford I need Igor Thiago to score. He is one of my favorite centre-forwards, he is a throw back, a real striker.”
My thoughts
Joe Cole believes there will be four goals in this match and in Newcastle’s last two visits to the GTech Community Stadium there have been six goals each time.
In the last game of the 2023/24 season, Newcastle won 4-2, while last season it was Brentford with a 4-2 victory.
Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle United have won three of their four away games at Brentford, while the last eight games between the two teams in all competitions have seen seven United wins.
Igor Thiago signed for Brentford in a £30m deal but ended up missing almost the entire 2024/25 season, making just one Premier League start after suffering a serious meniscus injury.
However, the Brazilian striker is making up for lost time as he has scored six goals in ten Premier League starts this season and is clearly a major threat. Thiago has scored in each of the last three Premier League wins for Brentford, four goals in total in this latest trio of PL wins.
Newcastle have kept nine clean sheets in 16 games (all competitions so far), including five in their last eight matches. If they can keep another clean sheet today and stop Thiago and his friends from scoring, it would go a long way towards United’s first PL away win of the season.
