Jets recall Zhilkin from Moose and place Fleury on injured reserve

The Winnipeg Jets announced Wednesday morning that they have recalled forward Danny Zhilkin from the Manitoba Moose and placed defenseman Haydn Fleury on injured reserve, retroactive to Jan. 6.

The 22-year-old Zhilkin was selected 77th overall in the third round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft and has taken noticeable steps forward in his development this season with the Jets’ AHL affiliate. In 30 games, he has already surpassed his previous career high in points, with a score of 14 (7G, 7A), after recording 10 points in 53 games last year. Zhilkin, a speedy winger, was a key part of the Moose’s improved performance compared to last season’s worst campaign.

Fleury had a terrifying collision with the Vegas Golden Knightssliding hard with the back into the end boards and remaining on the ice after impact. He was taken away on a stretcher and taken to hospital. Jets head coach Scott Arniel said Mike McIntyre from the Winnipeg Free Press that Fleury was expected to stay overnight, although it was later confirmed he was fired Tuesday evening. The full extent of his injuries remains unknown, aside from a broken nose and a bruised back.
Fleury also attended the Jets’ team meeting Wednesday morning, which was attended by Mark Scheifele described to Paul Friesen from the Winnipeg Sun as a “morale boost.”

Fleury, 29, has yet to record a point in 17 games with Winnipeg this season. In 324 career NHL games, he scored 10 goals and 34 assists for 44 points.

The Jets will try to break their 10-game losing streak against the Oilers on Thursday. Puck drop is at 7:00 PM CST on TSN3.
