Jets are weighing a surprise option with Hall of Famer

The Winnipeg Jets’ offseason gets a little more interesting when you throw Jonathan Toews into the mix. Should they give him a new contract or let him leave somehow? He has had some frustrating games, but on the other hand there have been games where it seemed like he had found his game.

That busy in late season – four goals in eleven games, including a ‘cleaning streak’ – adds a wrinkle. The big question now is: hometown boy or not, has he given the team enough to bring him back again?

Toews brings tremendous experience and leadership

On the plus side, you can’t overlook the experience he brings. Toews has experienced all the high-pressure moments hockey has to offer, and teams looking to advance in the playoffs usually need someone who can stabilize the space. Winnipeg’s younger guys could definitely benefit from sticking around for another year. And that’s more important than people admit. He’s been in fights that most players only dream of, and that kind of presence tends to wear off.

Don’t forget the hometown love. Winnipeggers have always supported Toews, so bringing him back would go down well with the public. Things like fan support, locker room chemistry and a familiar presence can make a little difference. And if the Jets give him a clean, defined bottom-six role, they can take advantage of what he has left without pushing him too hard. Light minutes, important situations, helping the younger guys: it’s not the worst plan at all.

Jonathan Toews has started warming up for the Winnipeg Jets. What now?

Toews’ production hasn’t been nearly good enough

But the other side of the debate is just as real. His numbers this year – seven goals and 12 assists in 56 games – are not what the Jets had hoped for. Even with that recent scoring bump, the inconsistency has been there all year. And his speed just isn’t what it used to be. This has become apparent in matches where he has taken penalties simply because he has not been able to keep up with younger, faster players. It’s hard to hide that in today’s NHL.

There is also the question of market demand. If teams aren’t lining up for him, the Jets should be careful not to re-sign him just because it’s convenient. Cap space is important, and using it on a veteran who may not move the needle could limit his options elsewhere.

The Jets have a decision to make: What next for Jonathan Toews?

Ultimately, the Jets have a fair decision. If Toews is willing to take fewer minutes and sign a friendly contract, there is a case to keep him. But if this hot spot goes away and he slips back to where he was before, maybe they’d better turn the page.
