Rest in peace, Jeep Gladiator 4xe. We hardly knew. We didn’t even know you about it. You were canceled before you even went on sale. Too bad, so sad. Anyway, this is simply the newest electrified vehicle killed by Stellantis, because the company re -assesses its product plans. Suppliers announced the deal in a letter that was sent at the end of last week.
Jeep said that the cancellation of the upcoming plug-in hybrid gladiator is immediately in force, and that all related activities and agreements would be concluded, according to Automotive news. It seems that the company did not waste any time with the decision to cut and run from what the third PHEV would have been in the Jeep -up line. It would have joined the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe and was planned to appear this year at a certain moment.
The Gladiator 4xe would have had a similar engine if the Wrangler’s: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with turbo vehicle linked to a few electric motors that are fed by a 17 kWh battery. The system is good for a sturdy 375 hp, 470 pound-foot torque and 21-like mile of fully electric driving range.
Jalopnik put his hand out to Jeep for confirmation about this and we received this statement in exchange:
“AS Customers’ Propulsion preferences for battery -electric trucks Continue to evolve, Stellantis is Reedsessing Its Product Strategy and Will No Longer Include An Electrified Gladiator Variant in the Jeep Lineup. The Jeep Brand Has Already Growding to Ensence Jepthesting to enste Vesting to ensture Even more customer-requested factory features, customization, and additional powertrain options in the near future. “
For now, the Gladiator soldier with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 will be as his only motor option, but it would certainly not surprise me if Jeep finds a way to cram his 6.4-liter Hemi V8 under the hood, à la the Wrangler Rubicon 392. The latter part of the explanation almost guarantees that, no? I mean, what the hell is Jeep in it? The regular Turbo Four of the Wrangler? I don’t think so.
Who still needs electrification?
This is only the last in a series of cancellations and plan changes that Stellantis and his subsidiaries have made, because the demand for electric vehicles has been delayed. We recently told you that RAM cancel his fully electric 1500 rev pick-up that was intended to compete head-off with the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra Ev.
Chrysler, Alfa Romeo and Maserati have all dropped their individual plans to only become EV brands by the end of the 2020s, and rates forced Dodge to kill the Charger Daytona R/T. It was the less powerful version of the electric charger, which was built in Canada. With the powerful Daytona Scat Pack that does not sell well and is being discounted, the R/T became an even more difficult sale.
This of course all happens as Stellantis offers the V8 engine in a large way. It just appeared again in the RAM 1500, and there are rumors that beat around that it will end under the hood of the charger again. That is why I really don’t think you should be too surprised if you see a kind of eight-cylinder monster appear in the Jeep truck. Stellantis found his niche and his America in 2011.
