Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown expressed his frustration with the performance following Saturday’s 100-95 loss to the San Antonio Spurs at TD Garden.
“I feel like they’ve gotten away with a lot, honestly. And I’m tired of the inconsistency. I’ll accept the fine at this point. I thought it was bull tonight,” Brown said.
He criticized the crew led by Curtis Blair, Jason Goldenberg and Nick Buchert. “Curtis, all those guys were terrible tonight. I don’t care. They can fine me all they want. But it’s insane. Every time we play a good team, it’s the same bullshit.”
Brown pointed to the team’s inability to get to the free-throw line as a key factor. “We shot four free throws tonight and lost the game by four. Not to say that’s the whole story, we gotta be better in the spots, I gotta be better in the spots, but damn it, just when I drive to the basket, I’m physical. I don’t flop, I don’t avoid contact. I go up strong and nothing. I had zero free throws tonight. The inconsistency is crazy.”
Despite the Spurs’ concerns, Brown acknowledged the Spurs’ defensive pressure. “They’re a good defensive team, but they’re not that damn good,” he said, noting repeated inconsistencies in decisions that favored the visiting team.
With the loss, Boston’s backcourt put up strong numbers, with Derrick White leading the Celtics with 29 points and Brown adding 27 points. San Antonio relied on Victor Wembanyama’s surge in the second half and scored 16 of his 21 points after halftime, including a left jumper with 19.2 seconds left that sealed the outcome.
De’Aaron Fox added 21 points and played a crucial defensive role down the stretch, while Keldon Johnson contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Spurs held a slight 53-52 edge in rebounds and limited Boston to just four free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.
The Celtics, who had won nine of their previous 11 games, fall to 25-13 and travel to Indiana on Monday. San Antonio improves to 27-11 and continues its road swing at Minnesota on Sunday.
