Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown attempted zero free throws in his team’s home loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. In total, the Spurs took 20 free throws at the Celtics, four attempts at the foul line. After the game, Brown spoke about how he thinks there is a growing disparity in the way Boston is allowed to play physically as opposed to their opponents.
“I’ll accept the penalty at this point. I thought it was some bulls*** tonight. I think they’re a good defensive team, but they’re not that damn good. I hope someone can just pull up the clips, because it’s the same every time we play a good team. It’s like, they refuse to make a call, and then they call touch fouls on the other end, and it’s just extremely frustrating, man,” Brown said.
“We’re playing hard. We’re exceeding our expectations, we’re competing hard on defense and they’re rewarding the other team with touching fouls and we’re going out there and guys are allowed to get away with it – someone please pull it up. Every time we play a good team, the inconsistency is crazy. I’ll impose the damn fine. Curtis, all those guys, were terrible tonight. I don’t care, they can fine me all they want.”
Brown didn’t stop at that one comment. He believed that he and the Celtics could have played better, but that didn’t leave the officials alone.
“I’m furious with the way they ran the game today. When we can’t get to the free throw line and teams are allowed to be physical and knock us off our spots, it’s hard to win games like that. We shot four free throws tonight and lost the game by four,” Brown added.
“I don’t want to say this is the whole game, the whole story. We have to be better in the spots, I have to be better in the spots, but damn it. I drive to the basket, I’m physical, I don’t flop, I don’t avoid contact. I go strong, I’m athletic and nothing. I had zero free throws tonight. The inconsistency is fucking crazy. Give me the penalty.”
