The move that led to Alexis Mac Allister’s 97th minute winner came as the Hungarian midfielder delivered a diagonal cross to Virgil van Dijk in the penalty area, with our number 8 shying away from a few easier lateral passes as the clock ticked quickly.

The 25-year-old was officially denied an assist as the captain’s header was blocked before the ball fell to the Argentina international and ended up in the net. But his confidence to roll the dice at that moment was crucial for the Reds to secure the three points and ignite a wild celebration.

Carragher praises Szoboszlai for moment of ‘arrogance’

On Sunday evening, Carragher analyzed the key moments of Liverpool’s win as he singled out Szoboszlai for praise for his involvement in the game’s match-winning passage.

The Air sports expert said: “I think he now has the arrogance of the best player in this team: ‘I’m one of the best players in the Premier League and European football, and I’m going to make something happen.’

“He decides to take on his man when he has easy passes – that comes from confidence, arrogance – and then he puts him in… Look at this from Szoboszlai – brilliant! He just waits for that moment to get that half-yard and he has it. Can he deliver? Yes, he can.”

Szoboszlai kept his cool in Liverpool’s hour of need

While many players in a similar scenario might have opted for an easy pass or whipped the cross into the penalty area, Liverpool’s number 8 showed immense composure in taking the perfect opportunity to slot the ball into Van Dijk.

It wasn’t a Hail Mary in the penalty area, but rather a measured piece of play as he teased Nicolas Dominguez and got enough space to slot in the perfect ball. And as Carragher rightly says, it is a testament to how much self-confidence the Hungarian midfielder now possesses.

Mo Salah recently described his teammate as ‘one of the best players in the world’ on current form, and although the 25-year-old did not play one of his best games yesterday, he still had the quality and presence of mind to produce the match-winning moment in the nick of time.

At the time, Szoboszlai also cemented the credibility that saw Van Dijk back him as a potential future Liverpool captain, with the midfielder keeping a cool head at such a crucial moment in the match and leading by example with his in-game intelligence.

Arrogance can be an undesirable trait in a footballer if displayed in the wrong way, but in the Hungarian’s case it was reflected in the confidence to set up his team’s winning goal at the City Ground and underlined what an excellent season he is having.
