The German star really made a name for himself in the Bundesliga as one of the most creative players in the league, and his performances caught the attention of Liverpool boss Arne Slot, who wanted to add some of his own signings to the attack.
And after a poor start in England, Wirtz has improved enormously since joining from Bayer Leverkusen last summer and is now scoring goals regularly.
The 22-year-old was expected to be used as a number 10 when he first arrived at Anfield, but he has also excelled on both flanks, but now former Reds star Jamie Carragher has opened up and claimed Wirtz can reach the same level as Kevin De Bruyne
Speaking on Sky Sport, the Kop icon said: “Wirtz is getting better and better,” said Carragher. “Ultimately the mantle has to be passed on, and there is no doubt that the boy has real quality.
“The Premier League has lost Kevin De Bruyne, (but) we have gained Wirtz. We are talking about special players coming into our league. I have been watching him a lot and thinking about whether he can reach De Bruyne’s level.”
“When I look at Wirtz, I think he can be as easy on the eye as David Silva, but he almost has a bit of both.
“I’m not sure he’ll get the numbers De Bruyne got. But speaking of a slow start… one of the games was City away and Gary Neville said he looked like a boy – now he’s got City at Anfield (this weekend). He’s confident.”
“He’s from a little boy and it’s a great opportunity to shove those words down Marcel’s throat.”
