James Garner is dreaming of playing for England after a strong start to the season with Everton and has admitted that is one of his goals for the current season.
Garner has been an integral part of David Moyes’ side so far and has impressed despite being played out of position at wing-back in several games. Injuries to Vitalii Mykolenko and Adam Aznou forced Moyes to play him at left-back at the start of the season, with Garner holding out on the wing.
Moyes has been particularly impressed with Garner’s performances and has backed his player to be part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup next year. “I think this is every English boy’s dream: to play for the national team. There is a lot of competition and I am not naive enough to say that I should be in the team,” the 24-year-old admitted.
“But at the same time I think I’ve had a good start to the season and ultimately that’s my goal for this season, to get there or there with the England team.”
Although he is yet to play for the England senior team, Garner has earned England caps at various youth levels. He was part of Lee Carsley’s victorious European Under-21 Championship-winning side in 2023.
As mentioned, Garner has played in a handful of positions so far this season, both in the middle of the park and on the wings. Believing his versatility will only strengthen his case for an England call-up, Garner said: “I’m very versatile. I can play pretty much any position – I’ve played pretty much every position for this club except striker and centre-half!”
“That could certainly work in my favor. But ultimately for me it’s about playing consistently well and winning games on a weekend, showing that I’m a natural winner and a half-decent player.”

I think James Garner has improved from last year, but given the players he is competing with for a midfield position for England it will remain a dream.

Garner has started the season very well, although perhaps some of his best work has come as an emergency left-back.
In the middle I’m not sure he’s doing enough to get a call to England. He’s a hard worker and a steady Eddie, but he ranks quite low in the league when it comes to progressive balls and carries, and is only halfway in terms of tackling and pressing, unlike someone like Anderson who ranks highly across the board.
James is a good player who is in good form at the moment. But I’m not sure it excels in any one feature or offers enough dynamism to reach the top. Probably his best attribute is his crossing, which is why I still wonder if he might be better off at RB than CM, although Mike Gaynes won’t like me suggesting that.

A real footballer, he just wants to play and he doesn’t care where he plays, he uses it all as a learning curve.
There is no reason to complain that it is not used properly. He just keeps going and gives his best, every game and in every position.
I’m looking forward to seeing him (if he isn’t already) become part of Everton’s core.
