Jamaal Charles on his advice to Texas Longhorns while haunting the national championship: ‘Take one game at the same time’

Jamaal Charles knows what it takes to win a national championship as a member of the Texas Longhorns.

The former four-fold Pro Bowler and triple all-pro that ran back made a name for themselves in Austin, Texas, and helped the Longhorns-together with Quarterback Vince Young-To their last national championship during the 2005 season.

Charles, who was a freshman at the time, ran for 878 Yards and 11 touchdowns during his first season in Texas. The Longhorns defeated the Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush-guided USC Trojans in perhaps the largest university football match of all time in the Rose Bowl of 2006, and led Texas to a 41-38 victory over the back-to-back national champions at the time.

“Every year everyone does not want to win only Texas but everyone wants to win a national championship,” says Charles in a one-on-one interview when asked if the expectation will win a championship in Austin this year. “Everyone has that expectation. We just have to take one game at a time and let it go that way.”

The former BIG 12 -standing first -year student of the year preaches and takes the “one competition at the same time” to achieve the Longhorns their ultimate goal to win a national championship.

“We don’t play the national championship in September,” says Charles. “Let’s play the national championship in January. Let’s get only one game at the same time to get us there. I think the staff, and then all the others they would preach, what I preach now.”

The Longhorns are entering their fifth season with Steve Sarkisian as head coach. They have experienced deep runs with Sarkisian and continue to the semi -final of the College Football Playoff in each of the past two years. “Having coach Sarkisian coach us over the past four years, you show that what type of coach he is to have a successful season he is here every year,” says Charles of Sarkisian. “That shows that he is simply not a one-hit miracle. The Longhorns give back 12 general starters from last year’s team, including five defensive starters of a unit who were in third place in the country.
