  • The Englishman struggled with grass this year and it was the same here

Jack Draper admitted that his lawn game needs a considerable improvement if he wants to restore his miserable Wimbledon record, after he had been declined for the third time in a row in the second round.

“I am really disappointed about the way my game has been in the grass this year, in all honesty,” said NO4 seed after losing four sets against 36-year-old Croat Marin Cilic on NO1 Court.

“I didn’t feel too good at Queen’s. I don’t know how I made the semi -final there.

“This year I was really struggling on the grass. I felt great on the hard, felt great in the clay, I felt that there were not many holes in my game, while as soon as I came to the grass, I felt a big difference.

‘It emphasized many weaknesses in my game, especially against a player like he played today, someone as good as he on the grass.

“I think the gap in my forehand certainly appeared. I was unable to deal with his pace of the ball in my forehand. I was spinning a lot. I think a lot of my success this year was with my forehand when I have more time and I can create the speed and spider that I want. ‘

Asked if the expectation, as the British No1, played a role, Draper replied: ‘It reminds me of Andy’s performance of what he won twice here, just incredible.

“But it’s not the busy, I just didn’t play well enough today.

‘There is a bit of a misconception that I am only because I am a 6ft 4 in lefty, I have to be incredible on grass. I clearly won Stuttgart last year, but I didn’t have a lot of experience on it.

‘I don’t think I played incredibly well on it before. It is clear that I never passed the second round here.

‘I am very determined to change that and to make it a surface that will be great for me. I feel that that is the way with every surface.

‘If you have the mentality of, although I don’t feel comfortable, I will let it happen, I’m going to make it better, it usually works. That is what I did in the clay this year. ‘

With the exit of Draper, the British challenge rests with Emma Raducanu, Sonay Kartal and Cam Norrie, who all play on Friday.

“We still have British hope,” said Draper. ‘Emma plays great, I hope she will continue and that we are all proud. She definitely has the opportunity to do that.

‘Cam, Sonay, these guys will now fly with the flag. I think they are incredible players, they all want it so badly. I know them all personally. They are all great people, great players. They deserve everything they are going to get. I look forward to seeing them playing … Maybe I will try to stay away in all honesty, because it hurts very much, but I want them to have great success. They certainly deserve that. ‘
