COMMENTARY
There is little left for the Blue-Chip prospects of the Red Sox in Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer to prove in the minors.
Both Anthony (MLB.com’s No. 1 prospect) And Mayer (no. 8) have already made compelling cases for a call-up with a large competition during their respective term of office with Triple-A Worcester in 2025.
Anthony who was 21 last week .322 with a .450 on-base percentage, six home runs and 18 RBI more than 42 games with the WOOSOX. The future star fan arrived on Wednesday and has run so often (39) as he led on the plate.
Mayer has thrive in his first glance at Triple-a competition, eight home runs hit and 41 RBI recorded during matches while playing a strong defense on both Shortstop and the second base.
But even with the impressive oeuvre that both Anthony and Mayer have already put together, they are still waiting for that call to Fenway Park.
Speaking in March, recognized Red SOX manager Alex Cora that strong impressions in the minors of both Anthony and Mayer went “to push us to make decisions” Once the regular season started.
Asked to visit those comments again on Wednesday, Cora acknowledged that those decisions remain in the stand – even – even while the results continue to slide with the big club.
“That is a great question,” Cora said for the final 5-1 loss of Boston to the Mets. “I understand where you come from. We are where we are. At the moment we have a few boys who play great baseball here. We understand that at some point I believe that they will be part of this. From now on they have not made that decision.”
The absence of Anthony and Mayer in Boston’s line-up is not so far not the only determining factor in Boston’s pedestrians 25-26 Record in 2025. The start rotation of the Red Sox Furthermore, Garrett Crochet has left much to be desired, while the bullpen have been sensitive to critical time.
But for a game where the Red Sox could only collect one run and work 16 times on the record, Cora sounds the explanation of several important luminaires with “Great Baseball” Holle.
Yes, the Red SOX have bodies that are currently blocking both an infielder in Mayer and an outfielder in Anthony.
But no matter how uncomfortable it is to uprill established veterans, the matter must be made that the Red Sox should move – in a desperate need for a spark – heaven and earth to bring their two top young talents to the show.
A way to reunite Anthony and Mayer with colleague Basell Wunderkind Kristian Campbell?
Continue the process of moving Campbell to first base, Ceddanne Rafaela Slot to the Infield … and get Trevor story from the comparison.
It is far from an ideal situation, whether it is about moving a legitimate gold-glove-Calibur talent such as Rafaela from the outfield or telling an established leader in story to sit on the pines (or consider a possible DFA).
But it is difficult to ignore the figures on this point or now the production of Mayer and Anthony (and patience) is on the record, or the lack of results at the level of Big League from various loyalty.
Especially the story will place the Red Sox in a difficult place in the coming weeks.
As good as his defensive work is in short, his game on the record has been a net-negative for his team for more than a month. During his last 25 games, the story only hits 13-out-100 (.130) with one extra single, six RBI and 36 Strikeouts.
Replacing the story with Mayer at Short might not result in a large drop-off on the defensive side of the ball and offer a higher advantage when it comes to pop and production on the plate.
Upstairs is also the name of the game with Rafaela moving to house Anthony. No matter how unfortunate it would be to get Rafaela from the middle, the Red Sox must find a way to add an on-base machine like Anthony to their line-up.
Will it be easy to allocate regular repetitions to both Anthony and Mayer, given the current Logjam in place? No.
But while Boston continues to enter water in a season that was opened with so much promise, Cora and the Red Sox no longer have time – and apologies – to get this team out of an extensive malaise.
Let’s see what the children can do.
