‘It’s never a penalty’ – Spurs boss Frank frustrated by penalty award in Newcastle draw – Football News

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank regretted the decision to award Newcastle United a penalty during the 2-2 draw at St James’ Park.

The two sides shared the spoils after an entertaining end to the match, which saw all four goals scored within the final twenty minutes.

Tottenham twice came from behind thanks to a brace from Cristian Romero, with the Spurs captain’s second goal adding a final point thanks to an acrobatic effort.

However, that came after Newcastle regained the lead through a controversial Anthony Gordon penalty, following a VAR review which ruled that Rodrigo Bentancur had pulled Dan Burn’s shirt in the penalty area.

It was a decision that Frank was far from happy with, although he praised his side’s determination to earn a point.

“It’s an absolute mistake by VAR,” he said. “It’s never a penalty.

“We want the ref [to make] calls on the field; to support that, it can only be a clear and obvious error. I think there are 10 of those per game.

“It says a lot about the mentality of the team. It’s been a tough week, I come here after four games in ten days against a good Newcastle team.”

“We suffered in the first 25 minutes. The way the team dealt with two setbacks showed a lot about the character of the team, which I like.”

However, Tottenham stopped a run of three consecutive defeats in all competitions.

Kevin Danso also praised Spurs’ character as he paid tribute to world-class defensive partner Romero after his double.

Indeed, Romero scored his first Premier League goals since August 2024 against Everton, and first away from home since September 2023 against Burnley, the first of which came with Spurs’ first shot on target in this match.

In his 199th appearance in Europe’s five major competitions, the Argentinian also scored more than once in a match for the first time.

“It was a tough game, it’s always hard to come to St James’ Park, and it’s always hard when you’re away from home,” Danso said. “We showed the mentality we had been working on all season.

“We just keep going. We just have to keep that mentality.”

About Romero, Danso added: “He always leads by example. [He] scored two very important goals; the second was a very nice goal. Today he showed again what a world-class defender he is.”
