Signing season is just around the corner.
Edinburgh has already reactivated Ben Vellacott and Emiliano Boffelli with the latter as another two years as a signing of his stay in Edinburgh until 2025. The Vellacott deal was described as ‘multi -year’ who would predict most of us as 3 years.
Only a few days later, Edinburgh confirmed that they had secured the services of Munster distance Ben Healy, in a much predicted movement, before the start of the 2023-2024 season and confirmed it as a 2-year-old deal.
So a few there with actual lengths in actual numbers, but most Squad -Deals are still entangled in code such as ‘longest deal ever’, ‘long -term’ or ‘roared future’. So keep in mind that this assessment that may go is largely based on trained guesswork.
However, we have an excerpt of information to help us. In an interview in the Times, when discussing the Healy Move, Mike Blair said: “We had 27 boys at the beginning of the year who no longer had a contract and we work through it.”
I think the 27 looks like this –
Pierre Schoeman
BOAN Wait
Jamie Jack
Nick Auterac
Harrison Courtney
Stuart Mcinally
Dave Cherry
WP Nel
Lee-Roy will die
Moon of brown
Angus Williams
Glen Young
Pierce Phillips
Bill Mata
Nick Hains
Henry Pyrgos
Charlie Siel
Jaco van der Walt
Blair Kinghorn
Charlie Savala
James Lang
Mark Bennett
Cameron Hutchison
Chris Dean
Matt Currie
Jack Blain
Henry Immelman
Boom, there is 27. Let me explain why I think they have no contract at the end of the season and what I think that will happen.
Pierre Schoeman Signed his last deal on 3/12/19 and it was described by Richard Cockerill at the time as a deal to take Schoey outside the SQ qualification that when he said it would have meant 2023. The question then is what ‘further’ means. I suspect this is the end of this season and I have heard a rumor that he is to France.
PRONUNCIATION. In the balance, but mainly because I would be disappointed if he left.
BOAN WaitThe last deal was announced on 9/2/21 and was confirmed by an offside article like a 2 years. He will then no longer have a contract at the end of this season. I think he will stay
PRONUNCIATION. Stay
Jamie Jack, Nick Auterac and Harrison Courtney I will come together because they were all drawn in 2022, but so effectively backup of loose heads, I think they all received short contracts of 1 year. AUTERAC has had a few short performances from the bank this year, is Scottish qualified and was mentioned in the Scotland team for the demolished 2021 summer tour, so I will say he is staying. Jack has one performance this year, but is not qualified by Scottish in contrast to Courtney that is through his grandfather. Courtney has already extended his first contract after his promotion of Watsonians Super 6 Side in 2021.
Judgments.
Auterac – Stay
Courtney – Stay
Jack – Leave
WP Nel. What can I say? He drew a new deal in February 2021, which it was said to be at the earliest until 2022. He still goes but will be 37 before the end of this season. I think WP will make a decision himself, but if he does, he won’t go far. That said, it will not be power and conditioning. If he does, we need reinforcement.

Luan Van Bruin was announced as a member of Edinburgh in March 2021 for the next season 2021-2022. The length of his deal is unknown, but two years is par and I suspect that it is what he has.
PRONUNCIATION. Stay
Lee-Roy will die. The Fijian did not present all that season for Edinburgh this season. He signed an extension in March 2022 and Mike Blair said he was ‘secured for next season’. So I expect that he no longer has a contract during the end of the seasons. Angus Williams is the Go to Man for that Tightthead Bench spot when WP is not available, so I think Atalifo will go.
PRONUNCIATION. Leaves
Angus Williams As mentioned, a few bench performances have had this year. He signed a two -year deal in 2020 and then in March 2022 his contract was extended with Mike Blair, who said he was “really happy that he had secured Williams for the following year.”
PRONUNCIATION. Stay
Glen Young And Pierce Phillips were signed by Edinburgh January and April 2021 for the following season. Young is now a Scottish international, while Phillips is not, only one start has to his name this season and has competition through our other international second rows in the form of Hodgson, Sykes, Skinner and of course Gilco.

Skinner, stay
Phillips. Leaves
Bill Mata. BBM signed a contract by Edinburgh in January 2021 for the last time and there was no indications that this was a multi -year deal, so his contract can be at the end of the season. He played 2 except 2 games this season, so I think Edinburgh gets the most out of him they can before he continues.
PRONUNCIATION. Leaves
Nick Hains. The last contract renewal of Hains was in 2021 and I would be surprised if it had been more than a 2 -year -old deal. He is now 32 and has spent quite a bit of time at the physical table this season, so I am not sure if he will have too many lovers away from Edinburgh and if BBM will leave, a Fit Nick Hains is probably worth holding.
PRONUNCIATION. Stay
Henry Pyrgos. The last time HP no longer had a contract, I predicted that he could retire and that was in 2020 and then he then drew a new deal at the beginning of 2021 that, in view of the fact that he was still here was at least a 2 -year -old deal. He will be 34 before the new season starts. So again, I go on the same route with one reservation. He can get a 1 -year -old deal and with 80 Edinburgh performances to his name that should be enough to make him a centurion before he retires.
PRONUNCIATION. Leaves
Charlie Siel. I think it was even a surprise for Edinburgh that Shiel had 50 gigs for the club because it was 3 days after his late cameo against Glasgow that they emphasized it. The Scrum half is 25 in December and really needs more than 191 minutes than 5 performances in the future. Maybe his time arrives when HP is retiring.
PRONUNCIATION. Stay
Jaco van der Walt, Blair Kinghorn and Charlie Savala. Jaco signed a new contract in January 2021 and BK followed in December of the same year. There was no hint about what Jaco had received, but BK’s own Instagram feed suggested that he had been signed for 2 years. That is a likely duration for both. Savala signed for the club in 2020 and signed again in February 2022. I know he recently offered a new contract, so on that basis he is in the 27. So all 3 halves of the contract and a new one in the form of Ben Healy only announced this week. Who is a stranger? Although it is only 1 point to become a 3rd top at the all times of Edinburgh, my money scoring at Jaco. Mike Blair has for the most part preferred Savala, so there must be something to give.

Jaco van der Walt. Leavening
James Lang A new deal signed in January 2021 that is suspected of being 2 years old. and in December 2021 Cammy Hutchison was upgraded to a full squadron contract from the Academy. Usually the deals for the younger players are a year, I assume, in case they don’t progress the way we hope they will do that. Matt Currie His first Pro deal in January 2022 signed in the same way. Mark Bennett And Chris Dean Both sign a day apart in May 2022 and their deals were described as extensions. So probably 1 year. I will keep this simple.
Judgments. Long, Hutchison, Currie, Bennett, Dean. All stay
Jack Blain. Blain signed his last deal in 2021 and it is very unlikely that it has been for more than 2 years, so it will be for innovation. One performance this year and only 5 in the previous year, together with the decision to move Boffelli to Wing and bring Paterson at the age of 15 instead of Blain suggests that his standard is not flying too high in Mike Blair’s position. In honesty, the competition he has for both wings is cruel, but …
PRONUNCIATION. Leaves
Our last man is standing Henry Immelman. Henry joined the club for season 2021-2022 after he was announced in April 2021. So despite no way, it is very likely that his contract was 2 years old. That seems standard for non-scots. He has grown on me as a player, but if you take into account that the Healy signing will have implications in other positions, he seems to be excess to the requirements and he is not SQ.
PRONUNCIATION. Leaves
So there we have it. Many deals that need to be resolved during the next small, while and although some names are wrong, I cannot have chosen the whole other 27.
I did the same half -baked assessment last year and looked at 17 players who may not have had a contract at the end of the season. I got anything but 3 and one of those 3 was the unfortunate George Taylor.
View this space.
Addendum. On 19/1/23, Dave Cherry signed a new deal for another 2 years in Edinburgh who warned me about the fact that I skipped along the whores in this piece. McBurney signed before the start of this season, so probably still had a year, while Stuart Mcinally got a ‘long -term’ deal in 2020, which can mean 3 years, so may be at the end of this season. It is generally known that he hopes to become a commercial pilot on his Rugby retiral. With the number of concussion he has had lately, I would think that this would be the right time to do that.
