Joel Dry joins Melissa Downes at the desk from Monday.

Journalist Joel Dry joins Melissa Downes with Nine news Queensland Desk, from Monday, August 18 to Co-anchor week night Bulletins.

This marks a return to a double header who presents the size after the retirement of Andrew Lofthouse earlier this year.

Dry, who became a member of the newsroom of Brisbane for the first time 14 years ago, said: “It is a sensation to come home to nine and to work with the best in the company. The newsroom is full of energy and working with Melissa is such an honor. She is the gold standard in Queensland News and is so excited for us to deliver the stories to us.”

Downes said: “I am very happy that Joel had the team joined to the team. We are both so passionate about telling the stories of our amazing state and the collaboration will enable us to really add something extra to our nightly coverage. I look forward to being more often in our communities and to make the core of it.”

Director of 9News Queensland, Brendan Hockings, added: “Building around Melissa and Joel says everything about how we want to deal with the developing news world. We have two top journalists who will tell practical stories. It also gives us a lot of flexibility how we respond to breaking news in a state that is as diverse as Queensland.”

Nine news Queensland has won every week of the official 2025 ratings survey year, with 18:00 viewers who grow with more than 14% on an annual basis.
