The perfect season of Stanford is already over.
Wake Forest’s is still alive.
A day after the Cardinal had dropped their first battle competition in 535 days in 535 days, the top belt fell into the country in the Demon Deaons, 3-2, in the match final of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup on Wednesday in Shorecres outside Chicago.
Wake’s only senior, Anne-Sterre den Dunnen, brought Stanford senior Kelly Xu to 21 holes before earning the clinching point. Transfers Casey Weidenfeld and Morgan Ketchum also won their competitions while the Demon Diakenen had a team of the top six amateurs in the world.
“They showed that they can clearly win, but everyone here contributes, and that’s so great about this team,” said Wake -head coach Kim Lewellen, whose team won Annika Intercollegiate last week to open the season.
On Tuesday, Wake Junior Macy Pate won the individual title of Stephens Cup, after teammate Chloe Kovelesky, who shared the medal on the Annika.
Wake’s next event, the Ruth’s Chris Tar whole Intercollegiate, only in 17-19 October.
Last season, the Demon Deaons Stanford handed losing one of the two match play, in the semi-final of the ACC championship; The cardinal would of course later drop the NCAA final to the northwest.
On the men’s side, LSU did not drop a match against North Carolina and won 4-1. Noah McWilliams was tied up with Niall Shiels-DoneGan by 21 holes and Alfons Bondesson tied with Sihan Sandhu by 20 holes when Arni Sveinsson earned the clinching point about Keaton VO.
“They are pretty tough,” said LSU head coach Jake Amos. “The first event that we didn’t have our best things and we have become a bit of a nice finish. We also have many good players at home, and it is just very competitive, and it is shown in how we play now.”
