It happens: Porsche confirms new gas box star and cayman

Porsche raised many eyebrows in 2022 when it promised to make the 718 fully electric at the expense of its gas models. Although the EV Boxster and Cayman are still developing, Zuffenhausen has realized that eliminating the combustion engine would be downright a fatal mistake. The German sports car maker now shows serious cold feet, and that is welcome news for enthusiasts.

Although the current 718 will bend with the final production run next month, a new generation will arrive with a gas engine that is still mounted behind the seats. In his newest ‘strategic repeat’, Porsche confirms that the next Boxster and Cayman continue to offer ice power. Here is the turn: only the “top” versions retained combustion engines.

What does that mean? Porsche can limit them to RS-the tile or something like that. Although we are used to EVs that are more expensive than their IJSEVIVALENTEN, the next flagship 718 could turn that script, making the gas version the more expensive choice.

We have asked Porsche if the next generation Boxster and Cayman with combustion engines will share a platform with the cheaper EV versions. If so, this would require expensive re-engineering, because the new 718 was originally only intended as electric. As an alternative, Porsche can update the MMB -hardware introduced in 2016 for the 982 series. A whole new platform seems unlikely, because it would place a big dent in the budget. It is difficult for a financial effort to justify for a shrinking niche.

Anyway, it is good to see Porsche-Backtrack and to keep the gas-driven Boxster and Cayman alive for the long term. And to be clear, this will not be a hybrid, but rather a pure ice experience. That said, there will be a gap between generations, because the next conventional 718 is only due to the end of the decade.

Elsewhere in the Roadmap product, Porsche repeats that a future gas crossover (with a plug-in hybrid option) will be in 2028 to replace the first generation of Macan. The fully electric Cayenne also stays in the pipeline, while the Taycan is not going anywhere. In the meantime, the “prestige” SUV with three rows, initially planned as an EV-Allene model, will also offer ice and PHEV versions “due to market conditions”. “In fact, the combustion-driven variants will first arrive, with the EV later.

Regarding the 911, luckily there is no change. The icon with the back will not be fully electric this decade, something that little would have wanted. However, hybrids will probably turn off the GTS and Turbo S. The ice cream Cayenne and Panamera will continue well in the 2030s, with Porsche already confirming that the V-8 is here to stay.

A model that is missing in the route map is a supercar. To defend Porsche, it never promised to build the Mission X. And with the brand that only returns from EV launch in the midst of lukewarm question, a fully electric flagship would be a risky gamble.
