A group of writers accuses Issa Rae of copying the concept behind her film ‘One of them days’.

Issa Rae is confronted with a court case infringement on copyright for alleged stealing of the concept of her well-received buddy comedy ‘one of them days’.

In a lawsuit brought on July 30, writers Joshua Isaacson, Shon Oku and Tyrone Perry accuse Rae’s ColorCreative, Sony Pictures, Tristar and screenwriter Syreeta Singleton of infringement of copyright and theft, theft, Hot 97 Reports. The suit claims that Rae’s Comedy from 2025, starring Keke Palmer and SZA, tells striking similarities with the 2020 script of the writers, entitled One of those days.

The writers claim that the character development, the plot structure and the overall tone of One of those days Extens a scenario that they previously threw at a former producer of Rae’s HBO -hit, Insecure. Veteran screenwriter John Brancato assessed both scripts and stipulated that the similarities were “substantial” and would be unlikely a coincidence.

The claimants started pitching their script at the end of 2023 and first presented it to producer Danny Hamouie, who never responded and is not mentioned in the suit. It was the first time that someone outside their group had seen the script. Subsequently, the writers submitted the script in April 2024 to producers Roman Arabia and Xavier Charles, founders of Green Eggs Go Ham, who refused the project.

Only a few weeks later the Rae production company announced One of those daysA film about two roommates who race around Los Angeles to come up with rent. Directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Singleton, the film premiered in January 2025 and earned more than $ 51 million at the checkout with a budget of $ 14 million.

The writers claim that Charles’ earlier connection with Rae as former Insecure Producer, combined with the timing of Rae’s project announcement, is too coincidental to overlook. In the lawsuit they claim that the Rae team “darkened the original expression of the claimants and pass it on as their own without permission, credit or compensation.” The claimants are looking for compensation, legal costs and a jury court.
