During his continuous war, Israel deployed laser weapons to ward off “scores” of air strikes, including drones, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Wednesday. This is the first time that the country has recognized the use of targeted energy technologies on the battlefield.
The systems were described as a less powerful “prototype” of the 100-Kilowatt iron bundle Laser interceptor who will be operational in Israel by the end of the year. The Ministry of Defense also released images of what it said were the lasers that intercept drones in the air.
The ministry did not give any details about when the systems were tested or data about interception rates. Defense Minister Israel Katz praised the futuristic weapon and said that its adoption was ready to “change the rules of the game in the region.”
The announcement suggests that Israel will soon be able to present other countries in the race for laser weapons. Nations have pursued the technology for decades, but efforts to scale lasers are complicated by considerable technical problems.
Israel’s anti -aircraft has had to deal with more than 26,000 air strikes of rockets, drones and rockets since October 2023. Many drones, however, drank his defense.
The larger laser of the Iron Bundle, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems Ltd., will be integrated into the air defense of Israel in the coming six months. The technology has been advertised as a cheaper way to ward off drones and short distance projectiles, whereby every interception costs less than $ 5. However, the system still has many technical limitations and cannot work in cloudy weather.
