Island veterans retain their titles: Table Tennis England

February 13 to 20 was Veterans Week on the Isle of Wight, with the Over 60s and Over 70s tournaments and the same two players winning these events as last year.

First there was the over 70s tournament and again a good match with excellent play from the island’s ‘golden oldies’, who love the sport and still play competitively.

In the semi-finals Tim Giles defeated Peter Clarke and Rob Smith defeated Trevor Jones. Tim then defeated Rob to retain the trophy he won the previous year.

Inevitably there were more entries for the event over 60, and it was no surprise that Paul Rainford easily won this event for the second year in a row.

Paul represents the IoW in the Senior British Clubs League and is one of the island’s top players. He defeated Spike Hughes in the first semi-final and Rob Smith defeated Bryce Wilson in the second semi-final. Paul then defeated Rob in the final.

The Association appreciates the efforts of Rob Smith for organizing the two tournaments. Despite doing this and coordinating the schedule for both events, he still managed to reach the finals of both tournaments.
