Is Villa Park a host stadium for EURO 2028?

Birmingham has been confirmed as the host city for the 2028 Men’s European Championship.

UEFA EURO 2028 will be played between June 9 and June 9, 2028 in England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland. A total of nine locations in eight host cities have been announced.

Birmingham is joined on the EURO 2028 schedule by London, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Glasgow, Cardiff and Dublin. Each city will provide one stadium for the 18th European Championship, with the exception of London, where both Wembley Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be used.

Will Aston Villa host EURO 2028 matches?

Five current Premier League clubs will welcome supporters from across the continent through their turnstiles in two and a half years.

Everton, Manchester City, Spurs and Newcastle United will host matches together with the host stadium of Birmingham, Villa Park.

Aston Villa’s home ground will host a major international men’s tournament for the first time since EURO 96, when the Netherlands, Scotland, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Portugal played in B6.

Villa Park was also used for three group stage matches during the 1966 World Cup. Four matches will be played there in 2028.

Which EURO 2028 matches will be played at Villapark?

Villa Park will host four EURO 2028 matches in total, three in the group stage and one in the round of 16.

Of particular interest is the final match in Group D. Should they qualify for EURO 2028, it will be ‘D1’ Northern Ireland and are therefore guaranteed to play their third match in Group D at Villa Park.

If they won the group, Northern Ireland would return to Villa Park a week later for their first knockout match against the team who finished second in Group F.

If Scotland qualify for the competition, Group F is the group they will be placed in. If they finish second in their group, their round of 16 match will be played at Villa Park on June 27, 2028.

Redevelopment of villa park for EURO 2028

Villa’s EURO 2028 journey has already been a tortuous one. Plans to redevelop the site were withdrawn two years ago, potentially opening the door for Birmingham City’s super-duper mega-stadium to step in, should it exist in time to do so.

But Villa’s proposals were revived in April and stuck Villa Park as a location for European Championship 2028.

“As the latest part of the North Ground regeneration plans, the North Stand expansion highlights Villa’s commitment to taking the fan experience to the next level while becoming a world-class sporting and entertainment venue,” the club’s official statement said.

“The redevelopment will increase the number of seats available in the North Stand to over 12,000. Combined with ongoing upgrades to Villa Park’s other three stands, the total capacity at Villa Park will increase to over 50,000.

“The renovation of the stadium will be completed in the second half of 2027, ahead of the UEFA EURO 2028 tournament which will host Villa Park.”
