Today’s great price or no dice GS 300 is that rarest of all things: an interesting Lexus. Toyota’s luxury brand makes great cars, but let’s face it, they rarely stir the loins. Let’s see if the price of this Straight-Six Sportsaloon makes us stir.
According to estimates of the Louvre Museum, somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors stop to see Mona Lisa from Da Vinci every day. That is claimed to be around 80% of the total number of people who visit the museum every day, wondering who makes the 20% that makes the problems and the costs of visiting the Louvre only to prevent Howdy’s whimsical smiling female friend.
Such a problem did not arise with the Volvo V70 -art car of 1998 that we considered last week, because it brings his art to the people, not the other way around. The canvas under art seemed solid and a manual swap also brought some fun in the photo. An asking price of $ 2,999 sealed the deal and earned the artistic endowed Volvo a BOB Ross-worthy 70% great price win.
A difficult act to follow
In the late 1980s, the three largest Japanese automaker brands began to work on the introduction of luxury brands that focus on the American market. This came when voluntary export restrictions between Japan and the US started earning the company money. The more expensive models of Acura (Honda), Infiniti (Nissan) and Lexus (Toyota) would offer higher margins and therefore conquer greater profit.
Lexus came on the market in 1990 with a Clean Sheet Halo car, the LS 400, and the more affordable sidekick, the ES250, a reworked version of the Camry. Within three years, the company strengthened the line-up with a coupé version of the LS and medium-sized opening filler called the GS. That GS was remarkable because he was not only the right size and brought important aspects of the larger LS to a slightly lower price. It also offered celebrity styling with its body lines written by none other than Italdesign Giugiaro. A four-door salon with long-deck styling, which was initial GS for each new iteration to rise all the way to the end of the line in 2020. None of the next generations had the origin of the first in their body designs, but the general looks remained pleasant enough.
Give it right … Six
That is simply the case with this 2000 GS 300 platinum. A second generation car, it lacks the slick Italian Pak-Carross series of the first generation, but it does have retro-looking blobular heads and fog lights that were all in the early Aughts. That look is replicated in the treatment of the rear lamp, although it is somewhat spoiled by the squircle lights in the boot lid that is faded to become almost clear by the sun. That, and some small wear on the wheels of the factory light, seems to be the only aesthetic issue that the car suffers from. On the positive side there is a more indompted large wing on the Decklid, which lends the car a little sportiness and probably makes it easier to assess where the rear bumper is.
Under the hood of the GS is a 3.0-liter 2JZ Straight-Six offer 225 hp and the same number in Koppel. Based on the under-hair recording in the advertisement, that is all in excellent condition (it seems that it is recently detailed) and it seems to be complete. According to the advertisement, the car has a modest 138,000 miles on the clock and comes with a complete service history because it was new.
An owner
This is a platinum edition that it is a bit enthusiast than the average bear, with added wood covering through the cabin and special badges on the factory factory. The owner keeps people in the trunk, so that we can enjoy the satisfactory vacuum tracks in the plush carpet of the cabin of a recent details.
However, some wear is clear here. Both the driver and the passenger seats show scratches and some fade in the leather upholstery. The middle armrest also loses the fight against elbow instusions, and that actually cracked through it. Everything else seems solid – and why wouldn’t it? After all, this is a lexus. However, it is very old school, without the middle pile screen for infotainment or navigation. It rocks both a cassette deck and a CD player so that your grandmother can take her music for the ride. Updates include what the seller describes as “a tasteful window tone” and “improved low beams for better visibility.” So far, this is a car that is an owner, so the seller must have all deets on that service history for every potential second owner.
A safe gamble?
It is fairly easy to reject Lexus Sedans as boring, but in this time there is no comfort in simple competence? Once praised as one of the most reliable and cheap to operate cars on the planet, Lexus -Sedans such as these still offer that feeling of silent wealth in their certainty. This, with its clean title and further certainty by its seller of reliability, comes with an asking price of $ 8,000. We must now discuss and vote on the value proposition it offers.
What is your opinion about this GS 300 and that asks $ 8,000? Is that a deal for some old -fashioned reliability and Swank? Or is this just a boring sedan with a boring like ownership wheat who needs a cheaper price tag to cause enthusiasm?
You definitely!
