How will the Montreal Canadiens deal with Patrik Laine moving forward?
The Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco was on TSN Radio in Montreal and was asked about Patrik Laine and his role with the Montreal Canadiens going forward.

Host: “What about Patrik Laine? Is he someone who could potentially get a look? I know this is a conversation we’ve had ad nauseam here, but it seems to me like he’s going to be moved, or given a chance to showcase himself here in the last few games before the deadline.”
NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, Patrik Laine and Potential Destinations
Anthony Di Marco: “To me, no, it’s just very redundant, especially on that top line. It’s like, as the saying is now, a Teemu version of Cole Caulfield. I don’t think there’s enough puck at the moment to put Patrik Laine and Cole Caulfield on the same page, or, let alone, on the same team sometimes.”
And I just feel like they need someone on that line to really get the puck. Be like a Zach Hyman type, like go get that puck, give it to Nick Suzuki, find the trigger man in Cole Caulfield on the ice. So no, I really don’t think Patrik Laine is the type of guy he would be looking for.
NHL Rumors.com Note: The Montreal Canadiens, as we’ve documented, are looking to solve the right wing position. Laine was valuable to the Canadiens last year as he was a big reason they made the playoffs. With Laine’s scoring streak in December 2024, the Canadiens don’t continue that winning streak and are in position late in the season to have a shot at making the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
However, Laine is now more of a power play guy and Caufield has taken over that role as the team’s top scoring threat. While Laine is still a threat to score, the Canadiens acquiring him was a low-risk, high-reward move.
NHL Rumors: Could Alex Newhook solve the Montreal Canadiens’ right-wing problem?
At this point, Laine could be more valuable to another team. He doesn’t fit what the Canadiens need on the top line and he doesn’t fit on line two either, so where would he fit? At this point, he’s the odd man out and will most likely move once the NHL season resumes.
