You can argue that Pierre Gasly has been King of the Midfield of Formula 1 in recent years, with his most important rival for that unwanted distinction as Williams driver Alex Albon. Given the fate of Alpine, soil in the championship of the constructors and a team that is now inextricably linked to uncertainty and indecision thanks to the spinning door leadership, Gasly’s recent decision to sign a new deal that will hold him in the Renault ownership team until the end of 2028 is a strange person.
Alpine has the better end of this deal. The rumbling of the choice of the second driver means that it has been in a state of self-induced confusion about who he should put next to him, which limits the opportunities that both Jack Doohan and Franco Colapinto produce their best work. This makes securing gasly for the long term one of the few Alpine movements do not deserve – -served praise.
But you have to ask: what kind of Gasly is in, since it was already contraction for 2026? After all, he offers guaranteed performance in that area of the grid and would be interesting for rivals where he was available. Although a switch to an established top team is a ship that apparently sailed forever when he was dumped by Red Bull Racing after only 12 races in 2019, there is always an external chance that some unexpected driver market could lead to Gasly the bill as number two. And even if not, Gasly would be a lot of demand due to more convincing upward mobile outfits for 2027 or ’28 and in a position to play the market to his advantage.
Gasly, who has become one of the more frank and honest drivers in recent years, does not polish this step with boring commonplaces. Although he increases the value of having “some clarity and showing my commitment” and is positive about the future of the team, he admits that the inks of a new Alpine deal was not a clear decision.
“Of course I did that, they are just normal things to do,” he said after the qualification at Monza when he was asked if he was tempted to look somewhere else. “It is not as if it was a no-brainer, looking at the performance at the beginning of the year. There is behind it, but to be honest, I believe that this is a very strong option. I just have to wait and show some good performance of next season.”
There are reasons to expect an improvement next year. Alpine throws its own motorcycle favor from a switch to Mercedes customers of the customer in a movement that lowers the team’s ultimate performance potential, but that can give it a shortcut to climb the schedule. In the worst case, it should eliminate the current disadvantage in terms of peak power and efficiency of energy storage that made the car the worst on the schedule at Monza and other power -sensitive traces. In the best case, if the Mercedes PU is just as strong as everyone predicts, the Alpine can give an advantage over many of the teams that it is currently behind.
That said, it would be ridiculous to suggest that it could bring the fight to the Mercedes team and McLaren, given his struggles, not to mention colleague Mercedes -customer Williams. Remember, although this is the same team that won world championships in the nineties in the 1990s with Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso in the 2000s, it has managed only one happy race victory in the last 12 years.
Gasly has lived and inhaled Alpine F1 since he joined the team in 2023, so he knows exactly what is happening inside. Although Flavio Briatorore, who returned as de facto team boss last year, has not been convincing so far, it is only in 2026 with the new rules that the process can be finalized in the longer term. It could be that under technical director David Sanchez the team will take a leap into the grid. If that is the case – and that is a big one – Gasly will be justified, such as on condition that it becomes a more consistent midfield power. That is a reasonable place for him to be.

That said, Gasly is not a fool. The exact details of his contract are unknown, but given that Alpine urgently needs a proven driver to build around, it is likely that there are clauses with which he could leave for an offer from a large team or if Alpine again cannot make the promised progress. To be the center of each F1 team in the cost-CAP era, when it is realistic to expect that teams that were once locked up in midfield, pushed and stand up as a racing-winning forces, is a good position to be, if there is flexibility to leave when the shortage falls short. Gasly will know that this is a possibility, especially considering his not convincing recent record.
Gasly is also pragmatic. He becomes 30 in February, and although he still has a lot of F1 miles left in him, this maximizes his earning potential. Most F1 Driver Pay reports must be treated with suspicion, but it was already well paid according to the standards of midfield before this new deal and Alpine must have offered him more. It would be unfair to accuse Gasly of Awarice because he wants to guarantee future payslips, or suggest that he is mercenary objectives on sporting, but it is important to be realistic. Famous Briatorore was initially not convinced by Gasly and has now started to recognize the value he brings to the team, which will be reflected in his wage agreement. Doohan and Colapinto did not score this year, while Gasly has picked up 20 points of his four top 10 Finishes. That makes him worth every cent for a team that would find it impossible to attract a director of equal quality. There is a lot that Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez are committed to Cadillac, which should be a distant last year, instead of holding an alpine deal.
Despite all his qualities, Gasly is very unlikely that he will be in the position to be world champion, whatever route he takes. At his best he is able to produce excellent racing weekends, exactly there with the top drivers on the grid until the point at which he does for Alpine, it looks like how Max Verstappen recently worn Red Bull. While he was overshadowed by the stage finish of Nico Hulkenberg, his performance in all three days at Silverstone was excellent and Alpine’s best finish of the year, sixth place. There have been weekends where it doesn’t matter how well he drove, it was hard to catch the eye. Occasionally Gasly struggled a bit while he pursued set up roads that ultimately did not deliver a magical performance boost on non-competitive weekends, but he has not wasted any opportunity to achieve a result.
What is particularly impressive in Gasly over the years is that he has been consistently improved, which is not necessarily a fact for drivers who fall into the well-great category. It is important to note that this is not a damn criticism because there are few really great drivers, and only 34 people have won the world championship in 75 years, but he has broken down his weaknesses. During his Red Bull Stint, in only his second full season in F1, he too often lost lost pursuit of the design from Hoek to Hoek instead of being able to choose the best global compromise. That is something that those who have worked with him since have emphasized as an area of improvement, with long -term and detailed debriefs who went back thanks to the profit of Gasly in terms of being able to see the big whole and a more focused approach to the most important changes. He has had a strong working ethics, willing to study endless data, which is now being expanded through efficiency and clarity.
He has also tightened his skills to get the best out of a wide range of carnamics. Fundamentally, he is a driver who likes to be on the brakes and loves a responsive car upon arrival, provided that the back has the stability he needs for full confidence. When the current regulations were introduced in 2022, he had to work to adapt to cars that, in broad lines, tend to slow-corner understeer and therefore do not respond so well to a late inhibition approach, while he also flocked at high speed. There were times that year, in his last season with what is now called Racing Bulls, when the limitation of the front-end braked him, but he worked hard to tackle that. This has made him a more adjustable driver, able to be at his best more often. He also has experience, combined with the confidence that was rebuilt with Red Bull’s Junior Team that means he knows what he wants and needs, making him a reliable performer.
If Gasly could be on or near every weekend, he would be in the upper caliber of the driver that you would point out as a potential world champion. However, adaptability and consistency in the delivery are two of the most important characteristics of the large drivers and he shoots with a small margin, but a significant one if you make a distinction between great F1 drivers and very good. He nevertheless has the skills to get you results, as he proved at Monza in 2020 by closing a racing winning opportunity. At the best, when he is completely confident in a qualifying round, he can be breathtakingly fast.
Gasly is a better driver than Alpine now earns. The disadvantage of this means that if Alpine continues with its recent process, the weaknesses continue to expose his weaknesses brutally. The advantage for Gasly is that he places a bet on a team that he has established firmly to finally make sustainable progress and to bring him to the position to win races. It may seem like a long chance now, but if it comes out, it will pay a lot.
