Irfan Pathan predicts that foreign players will attract huge interest from CSK and KKR
Cameron Green is emerging as a top draw due to his seamless all-round skills, making him a direct successor to KKR post-Andre Russel‘s IPL retirement and move into a coaching role. The 26-year-old Australian boasts impressive IPL credentials, amassing 452 runs in 2023 with a strike rate of over 140 for Mumbai Indiansfollowed by 255 runs and 10 wickets in 2024 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Pathan highlighted KKR’s huge wallet, which allowed them to aggressively pursue Green, while CSK saw him as a like-for-like trade for Sam Currantraded to Rajasthan Royals in a multiplayer deal involving Ravindra Jadeja And Sanju Samson. Green’s ability to hit higher and stitch a bowl adds immense value to spin-friendly pitches, potentially fetching bids above his base price of ₹2 crore.
“Cameron Green is a top quality all-rounder, and with KKR entering the auction with a deep pocket, they will certainly target him. With Andre Russell retired, Green offers an equal replacement – someone who can contribute with both bat and ball, although he will likely bat slightly higher up the order. I expect CSK will also show interest,” Pathan said during JioStar’s pre-auction show.

Pathan predictions 2i.e foreign player as CSK’s backup plan
Should CSK miss Green, Pathan predicts a reunion with Daryl Mitchelltouting his spin-handling expertise suited to Chennai conditions. The New Zealand The batsman delivered 351 IPL runs at a strike rate of over 131 in 15 matches, including two fifties, with notable contributions such as 63 off 34 balls. CSK’s earlier investment of ₹14 crore underlines his proven stability at the middle level and his occasional bowling utility.
“Daryl Mitchell is a high-quality overseas batsman who plays spin exceptionally well – which is exactly why Chennai Super Kings previously invested heavily in him, paying around Rs 14 crore. His ability to handle spin on tricky surfaces like Chennai’s makes him a strong asset. With solid experience in both international and competitive cricket, he brings the temperament and skill to teams that a proven overseas performer looks for,” Pathan added.
Pathan’s insights from JioStar’s pre-auction analysis highlight how both players are handling slot demand abroad, fueling a potential bidding war as franchises rebuild for the 2026 season. This strategic focus on quality all-rounders could redefine team balances in the cash-rich event.
