Danger in the seven seas.

Shipping around the world is suffering the consequences of widespread geopolitical tensions.

We have Russia, Ukraine and Turkey in the Black Sea, the Houthis in the Red Sea, the US and Venezuela in the Caribbean, Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden… and of course the Iranians in the Strait of Hormuz.

On Wednesday (24), Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized a foreign oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian authorities said the ship was smuggling fuel.

Euro news reported:

“Authorities detained 16 foreign crew members but did not reveal their nationalities or the tanker’s flag, Tehran-run state media reported.

The ship was carrying about 4 million liters of fuel when it was intercepted, according to Mojtaba Ghahramani, an official from the provincial Justice Ministry, quoted by news agency IRNA.

In November, Iranian forces seized another ship in the Strait of Hormuz for alleged violations, including illegal cargo.

“A fifth of the world’s traded oil and a quarter of the oil from the sea flows through the narrow Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran has repeatedly warned that it could block the waterway, while the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, remains present to ensure shipping lanes remain open.”
