Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has encouraged the Council of Control for Cricket in India to assign more Indian Premier League teams to the State. He pointed to the great population of Uttar Pradesh and the growing sports infrastructure as the main reasons.
Speaking during the final ceremony of the Uttar Pradesh T20 League in the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Luckknow on Saturday, the Chief Minister argued.
He said that all athletes in the state should get a platform and added that Uttar Pradesh produced international players.
He also appealed directly to the BCCI with a smile. He said the state has a population of 25 crore, but only one IPL team. According to him, Uttar Pradesh should have at least four teams in the tournament.
Luckknow Super Giants is currently the only franchise of the state. The team was introduced in 2022. The comments of the main minister emphasize the ambition of the state to strengthen his role in the Indian cricket.
He also encouraged players during the event. He said that the state government is committed to offering world -class sports facilities.
On X he wrote that stadiums are being developed in Varanasi, Ayodhya and Gorakhpur. He also mentioned plans for mini stadiums in every block and entire stadiums in every district.
